    Breakdowns

I have been fortunate in my 30 years of bass fishing to have never broken down while on the road with my bass boat in tow. I was wondering, what is the best way to handle the situation other than calling 911. What is everyones opinion?

I've always wondered that as well........

On a similar subject: If you have a tandem axle trailer and a tire goes bad, can you remove the wheel and tire and continue on just three wheels?

Usually. You have to chain or strap the bad axle to the frame to get the weight on the other axle because of the way the tandem works.

I wouldnt take one wheel off and run on three wheels. Bass boats are heavy and that would have to be a lot of stress in some odd places where stress shouldnt be. I would remove both wheels from the one single axle and then go to the nearest place to perform repairs.

Had a blown motor on Lake Kissimmee, actually on Lake Cypress and had to use my trolling motor for over an hour to get back. It s u c k e d because i had all that time to think about how expensive this was going to be. Back then i was making $12 or so per hour and it really taxed my bank account!

The best defense of an offense. I carry a complete hub, to include bearings, seal, hub, and oil or grease. I also carry tools to fix most anything. If you think about the common problems that may come upyou can carry what you need to fix it or at least get you to a dealer or repair station. Good luck.

    Re: Breakdowns

Certainly one of the worst time's to break down while towing your boat. Had it happen to me couple times. On the boat stud bolts broke off and there went the wheel, boat had to be tow in on flat bed. Another time my truck broke down fuel pump went out another bad experience. Like someone mention try to have some extra parts with you and the tools you need to fixed some of the problems. One of the best things to have is a cell phone. If you break down and have to leave truck and boat, people will robbed you blind.

    Re: Breakdowns

I have had a bearing go out on my boat trailer about 2/3 of the way to the lake. Took off the wheel with bad bearing and went to the lake launched and fished. Got back home on three wheels no problems this is why I bought a tandem trailer in the first place as to not get stranded.

Another thing to think about is what if your tow vehicle breaks down. I have AAA plus and it will tow my vehicle in but not my boat. If you do call in for a tow be sure to ask for an extra vehicle with a ball the right size for your trailer to be supplied as well. You will have to pay for that out of your pocket. AAA plus towing package doesn't include that. You sure don't want to leave your boat on the side of the road.

I have tried to find out in the past about the Kentucky AAA plus/RV package they have told me they wont tow in a boat trailer, just travel trailers. Any body heard anything different about this. It is hard to find anybody at AAA to talk to who knows much about anything.
