I have my 6 ga. trolling motor wire attached to my marine terminals w/copper lugs. The wires eventually work loose and out of the lugs. I usually just crimp the lugs onto the wires but was wondering if I should solder the wires into the lugs. Anyone have any good tips? Thanks in advance for replies.
you could, but then you add lead and tin (which is in most solder) the dissimilar metals could lead to corrosion. I also think it would be difficult to get a "good" reliable solder connection thru-out all inner strands with a 6 AWG conductor in most DIY garages. With the proper terminal and crimping tool the connection should last the life of the boat, mines been good since 1994. The right crimping tool for a 6 AWG Conductor is gonna be about as long as a good sized pipe wrench and costs over 150.00. Don't know where you're at, but maybe some marine or auto shop would have a crimping tool that you could borrow.
Once done, if you want to ensure longevity, coat the exposed stranded conductor end with liquid electrical tape (neoprene rubber) to keep all moisture out. 2 cents.
