    Going small in Summer heat

Guys, I have used a tactic for several summer on lakes (not moving water) that will almost always produce some bass. I'll share it.

On hot days, (I have to fish in the daytime some as some of you might as well) when bass arent hitting cranks, spinnerbaits, jigs or 6' worms or larger, go to smaller worms (4' or so) with a light bullet sinker (1/16) and a 2/0 hook on a light action rod with 6-8lb line. Bring it ALL the way back to the boat, very slow and try to stay in deeper water. Often, you will not feel the bass hit it, you will just see your line move very subtle. I have finished out many a limit on hot summer days when the traditional methods wont buy a bite in this way. Another classic that works like this but often is overlooked for flashier and more expensive baits is the lowly mr twister grub, usually white, fished on a 1/8 jig head. It can absolutely be the best producing bait in your box during the summer months. It is my hope you guys use these tactics and enjoy the same success I have.

Re: Going small in Summer heat

Andy, I have some big 10' culprits for nite fishin, but dont get to nite fish that much. But man, seems to me that often times the fish are either scared of them or are looking for something smaller. I have caught some big fish here and there on them for sure at nite. But using a big worm also means big line (10lb or better)

I dont 'peg' the 4' worms I throw, usually a 4' purple/flake or something like that on a 1/16 slip bullet. But the other day for instance, i was throwing a 6' black yamo and my bro was throwing 4' purple flake, he had 9, I had 3. So I switched and caught a few more, but I was using 8lb test and he was using 6. I really think the lighter line and smaller worm was the difference.

As far as the grubs go, yamo makes some 3' grubs that are just lethal on a 1/4 or 1/8 jig head fished slow. I hit the bottom and then keep my rod tip down and slowly crank it in. Honestly, that has been my best producing bait this year (in dark green or white) and you dont often lose fish on those jig heads.
