    Heading to Cannelton from Louisville

Thinking of heading to Cannelton Dam on friday for the first time ever. Some of you have been saying the whites and hybrids have been good. Is that still the case. Are they in the jumps where kastmasters will work. Also how are the catfish biteing. Any numbers or size. Really want the jumps but as the sun comes up friday its gonna blaze. Also whats the easiest way there and which ramp? Thanks in advance and any help is much appreciated.

Unhappy Re: Heading to Cannelton from Louisville

I hate to rain on your parade but I'll give you my results of two trips up there recently. I do fish for stripers at Cannelton frequently and probably read the same reports that you did. On my last two trips we boated 3 small stripers, 15 drum and 2 skipjacks. The shad did jump some and I believe it was skipjacks feeding on them since we couldn't get a striper hit on topwater or kastmasters(just drum). I don't know what the problem is, there were 8 boats up there Tue. and I saw about five stripers landed. The best way to Hawsville from L'ville is take I64 to Ind 37 and follow it to where Ind 237 turns left. Exit there and follow to Cannelton. There is a nice ramp in Cannelton and also one in Hawsville. The **** will be about 2-3 miles up stream. Go under the bridge. I still believe you can catch them. As usual, it's just a matter of timing. Two weeks ago we had one the best days we've ever had.

Question Re: Heading to Cannelton from Louisville

I'm sorry I'm not a catfisherman, I'm just a catfish eaterman.(ha) It seems like I've seen them at (1) the edge of the last open gate, (2) near the scour hole that is in front of the rip-rap on the ky. side and (3) right in the middle of the river where the swift water begins to smooth out,(4) through up into the boils near the dam and drift downstream. Again, I don't fish for catfish and this could be totally inncorrect.

You need to take a bait rod with you to catch some skipjack if your catfishing. Your chances of catching cats are much better if you use fresh cut bait.

Re: Heading to Cannelton from Louisville

JUst got back and I'm still hot as hell. River was scorching. Well managed 2 channel cats, one blue and one flathead which was about 8pds. Oh yeah one 17 inch sauger. Loads on skipjacks too many to count and big ones at that. Those big ones are like freshwater tarpon as soon as you hook one they are out of the water jumping loose. Good time, would go back if the hybrids whites or stripers were in the jumps good but not really worth the drive for me to catch what we got. Thanks for the directions and help.
