    Barren River Walleye

    Ok guys, and gals.......

I came across an article about walleye being stocked in barren river.......is this TRUE? Here is a link to the article:

    http://www.courier-journal.com/blogs/outdoors/2007/06/walleye-return-to-barren-river-maybe.html

So, if this is TRUE, how do people feel they will do. I've been targeting walleye this year in a couple places.......Nolin, Dale Hollow, Lake Cumberland, Green, etc, etc..........Walleye in and around Barren would just be another bonus.

    Anyone have any other info.

SSKY. You seem to be our defacto "expert" on the walleye around this area, do you have any ideas on this.........good, bad, indifferent.

    Thanks,

    Geo

    Re: Barren River Walleye

After reading the artical I wonder how they can make sure the natural strain can not make it through the dam itself. I have seen many fish come out of the spill way thru the dam some of the larger were tore up pretty bad. But there were some smaller fish that did make it. The water temp of the lake and the quality of the water being dischared has changed greatly over the last 15 years the bottom of the lake can no longer produce cold enough water to support trout releases. water color and odor has gotten much worse. and I honestly believe the fishery has declined considerably. pat of which is the water and the other part was a lack of law enforcement on the banks. I was there the day the state record hybrid was caught and in the early 90s 10 to 15 pounds was a daily catch. There were several different groups moved into the Bowling Green area in that time and they litteraly kept every thing they caught with out reguard to size or creel limmits. I would love to see another fishery open up on the lake and the streams leading to it , hopefully this drought will be over after the winter and with the new brush in the shallows Barren will get back to some of it's glory days.

Hi! New to the board but a long time Walleye fisherman. If you google Walleye fishing Kentucky there are a few articles about the stocking programs on other lakes in Kentucky. Laurel for instance, use to stock fingerlings until they found the survival rate was terrible. To many predatory fish. Over the last couple of years they have stocked 8" fish into the lake because the survival rate greatly improved. I would have to believe that fingerlings in Barren River might have the same problem.

first let me say hello Brick and welcome to the group:
You make a very strong point there, the hybrid in barren would cream the fingerlings if they made it to the lake itself untill they were at least 8 inches I have caught hybrids at the Narrows that could and did take 6 to 8 inch shad in one at even 5 pounds these brutes would hit a mercury 10hp if it looked like food I have only caught 3 wal eye so it would be a nice adventure to have another predator to look for.
