I'm planning to fish lake cumberland this weekend. Anyone know where I could buy gizzard shad or alewives within a couple hours drive?
where are you coming from?
Try the bass pro shop right Off of Hwy 90 heading toward Monticello. It is only a few miles from Hwy 27 and he has a huge selection. It is in with a gas station as well and I think it is a Shell station.
Pro Bass does not have gizzard shad, & I don't know anyone who does. Especially this time of year. Gotta catch your own.
I live in the Monticello area, but I've been having to drive to other lakes to catch bait when I want to fish down here. I catch alewives in the spring and early summer with relative ease, but when I have to get gizzards this time of year, well...that becomes very nearly impossible on Lake Cumberland. I went down to Beaver last Wednesday from about 5:00 until dark, and after beating my brains out, I finally caught two way oversized gizzards that it would take an absolute whale to swallow.
Alewives are easy right now - just rent a slip and put a light out. Never underestimate the size bait a 15 lb fish can swallow - you may be suprised. As Tim Adriene says, "if you think your baits too big it's probably just right."I live in the Monticello area, but I've been having to drive to other lakes to catch bait when I want to fish down here. Thanks, I'll give the light a try.
Is it just me, or is everyone having trouble harvesting gizzards on Lake Cumberland? Do you think the large volume of alewives in the lake causing the problem? I can go to other lakes, like Cherokee for instance, that are chocked full of both stripes and hybrids alike, and the gizzards are easily obtainable.
Additionally, for those knowledgeable of Dale Hollow Lake, are the gizzards plentiful down there?
