Was hacking on an answer to a question someone asked, and the thread disappeared. Anyhoo, here's a cut and paste.
DNS= Domain Naming System.
Every device on the internet has a numeric address assigned to it, and data is actually transferred between those addresses. The rules and numbering scheme are defined in a set of internationally accepted standards named TCP/IP, so your computer's number is known as it's TCP/IP address.
DNS servers are computers that translate (resolve) long addresses to plain text names. For example fishin.com's TCP/IP address is 204.255.228.104, but DNS allows you to just type fishin.com instead of that long number to get to their web server. Typically your internet provider furnishes a DNS server for your computer to use.
By the way, TCP/IP = Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol. I could do a basic explanation of that too, but you'd prolly fall asleep of boredom.
Thanks Devels Horse, I was the one that asked what DNS meant. I think the thread disappeared because the problem of the missing/mixed up home page got resolved.
