I waded the Elkhorn on Monday. The water is clear and approximately 3 inches above summer pool moving @ 400 +/-cfs.
Fish are hitting tiny soft plastics free drifted in current or ripped across shoals and allowed to drop back. The water is very clear which makes a stealthy approach, long casts, and down-sized equipment keys to success. The crayfish are slowly but surely appearing and I'll switch to fly fishing crayfish imitations once they are in full force. Speaking of fly fishing, now is the opportune time to fly fish for carp and drum on the Elkhorn. What a ride on a 6 weight! Fish are hugging the bank and with a slow and quiet approach one can drop the fly right on them without spooking the school.
