Before anyone can help answer your question they are probably going to want to know how much money you want to spend (and will really spend) and what you want to fish for.

It's been enjoyable reading these boards for the past couple of weeks, now on to posting!
I'm wanting to get started fishing again, having taken a break since my childhood. It's been so long since I last fished that I'm basically starting from scratch. Any tips?
I have a 3 year old daughter that I'd like to teach to fish as well. Something that daddy and daughter can do together. Any tips on fishing with children?
What should I look for when purchasing a rod/reel? From my old experience I know that I prefer a spinning reel... I've bought a barbie rod/reel combo for my daughter's birthday, but what about me?
Thanks!

With a 3-year old, go after bluegill or anything else that is biting good. The key at that age is keeping them busy catching fish, no matter what the size. Bored kids lose their interest real fast.
Seems like yesterday I was doing the same as you. Now she's 25-years old. Enjoy every minute fishing with your little girl. Good luck.
I imagine that 90% of the time will be spent along the shores of some near by neighborhood ponds/lakes. "Worm and bobber" fishing. We live in Louisville and I can easily get to Miles Park, Fishermen's Park, Long Run, etc. As well as Tom Wallace and Waverly (near where I grew up). Maybe others?
The other 10% of the time could be along the shores of Taylorsville, Nolin, Rough River, etc as my wife and I begin to introduce her more and more to the outdoors.
I definitely do not want to break the bank trying to get outfitted. For conversations sake, let's say that I have $50-75 to get completely outfitted.

Well your description will keep the cost down in my book. I used a cane pole until I was about 7. Around seven, Dad got me a Zebco One and I used it until I was about 10. Then I learned the pain and joy of a 5500C.
For bobbers and anything from carp to bluegill, I would go to Wally World, KMart, or any other big box discounter and buy a Zebco 33 rod and reel set. I would then buy some 8 pound test Stren, a box of #8 hooks, a box of split shot sinkers, and few small bobbers. From there, you are set-up to catch all the bluegill swimming for not much cash. Gotta dig the worms yourself for the full experience.![]()
Disclaimer: There are a million ways to go at this. My suggestion is just my approach.
Cheese is right, keep it simple. A Zebco outfit for the kiddo, and a spinning outfit for the ol' man. A cricket cage, bobbers, sinkers, etc. and you're set to keep the little girl happy as a clam. Now add a couple of white/ chart. spinner baits, equip. to texas rig a few plastic worms, lizards etc, and a couple of shallow running cranks, and you're ready to terrorize the local farm ponds. (oh, gotta have a buzz bait too) Don't expect to fish a long time before she loses interest, but that's ok too. It's the best gift you can ever give. JoeB

I can't begin to thank you enough! I posted hoping to get a few tips like "try not to hook your daughter while casting", and now I'm waiting on a package full of information!
Thanks again!

I have been on this site since 1999 and i must say its getting pretty shady anymore.
I may take the hit for this but i know im not the only one who feels this way.
I guess I may be naive, but what's so shady? Think this guy's trying to scam someone out of a couple of 202s? I guess I could be wrong, but I think his original post just asked for some simple advice. I'm just sayin'.....
