I am planning on fishing the Ohio River this weekend below Meldahl Dam.
Has anyone been fishing for stripers/hybrids on the Ohio lately? If so, any advice?
Fished below mcalpine last week caught several, using rattletraps, big inline spinners and jigs. If the water below the dam is still murky and you don't get any bites try back up any creek close to the dam...good luck...Chuck
Did you make it up to the dam?? Any luck? at times you can pick up stripers and sauger/walleye. Also did you use the ramp at Foster?
I finally made it out on Sunday morning. I tried to put in at Foster, but the ramp was covered in about 6" of mud. I drove up to the dam and bank fished for about 1.5 hours. The only thing I caught was skipjacks. I didn't see anyone catch any stripers, hybrids, white bass. It looked like all the gates were half open. I didn't see one boat on the water below the dam, which is not a good sign. The water was still up a little and still muddy.
I fished below McAlpine again this weekend for a few hours on Sunday afternoon. Tried rattletraps, white jigs, casting spoons, and live shad. I fished around the rocks for a while and only caught one skipjack. Then I went and caught a bunch of shad, mostly 4"-5" and some 8"-10", and tried live bait around the lock. Managed to catch one ~8lb flathead and that was it.
Does anyone use live bait below the dam for stripers? If so, what is your technique?
