    Cumberland River Questio

I hope to fish the river next Thursday but I can't get a hold of the guy I was going out on the boat with. I saw it was running at around 3,000 cfs and 0 or 1 generators were pumping. I was woundering if I can fish this river from a kayak. I am looking around the Helm's and Winfrey area. Which put in would I be closes to the gravel bars by the power lines. I have heard about them. I have never fished the before.

Also I was planning to fish the hatchery creek the Wednesday before. Would this be a good area to hit. I will be staying in Somerset. So, if anyone knows any good areas I could hit up for trout that would also be great. I can fish either from foot or kayak. Please any info can help. Ronnie

Helms Landing is closer to the power lines. If you don't have a second vehicle down stream, I would think that you could only use the kayak at low flow. I don't think you could come up stream even with just one generator going. I would find the generation schedule and put the kayak in at low flow, and head up stream as far as I could. When the generators turn on, you can just float back down to the landing.

The only time I really like to fish the hatchery creek is in winter when fish come up there to spawn. At this time of year, I would much prefer to fish the main river. Good luck.

They haven't been running water from noon to three PM (Central time) daily. So you could put in below the dam and have a very predictable situation there for three hours. Then if you drive down to Helms about 5-6 PM it will be quiet/shallow there as the water drops. Paddle upstream. Fly fishing has been slow but bait and spincasting mepps pretty decent.

With just one vehicle, you could float from Rock house to Winfrey's.. Good stretch of water to fish.. It's about a 5 mile float trip, but only a 1 mile walk back by road to your vehicle..

    Ronnie,

This is the guy you're going fishing with...sorry I couldn't get back with you last night due to my job, and this morning I had meetings. Left you a voicemail a little before lunch.

I'm good for next Thursday unless it's pouring the rain.

I'll try to call you again later.
