Wondering what type oil everyone uses for their boats. if you really need to use the specific oil the manufacturer sells or if the off brand twc-3 oil is good enough
I use any brand in my small 9hp outboard but when I had that big Yamaha all I used was their lube....just in case it really made a difference.![]()
I now use the tech oil from Wally world, as it is cheaper, it does smoke a little more but it works. But if you have a newer motor you might need to use the brands they recomend due to warranty issues. I have an older Merc, used to run only Quick Silver but now buy what I can afford.
same here i use the xd 50 evinrude oil in mine just in case
Yamalube here, just in case. However, in my smaller 75 I used to have - I used any oil and it was fine.
Yamalube for me.
I used the Tech Oil from good ol Wall Mart in a 70 HP Evinrude for a couple of years, tryin to save few $$$$. Blew it up and the guy that fixed it told me what I had been using as soon as he tore it down. Now I spend the extra $$$ and get the good stuff.

For many years I used a synthetic blend in my merc, it ran fine. Now got a four stroke. Maybe cheaper oil will work just fine, but how much cheaper is it? About 6 bucks a gallon for walmart oil, and pennsoil
I have been using Quick sliver for years and I have never had any problems with it, I get it at wal-mart. My merc. owners manuel recommends it.
Yamalube for my Yamaha! A few dollars more, but what's a few bucks when you're talking about a $10,000 engine? Pay now or pay later is the way I see it.
M&C Outboards in Shepardsville sells bulk Yamalube or Mercury premium plus at a great discount price. If you don't have an empty gallonto take there they often have some sitting around. Phone 502-957-4833. Nice people..best prices .
Any TCW-3 is fine for your motor but I use Pennzoil Synthetic for my 175-Opti Max. Also use synthetic gear lube too. I don't care what the mfg recommends. Of course they will endorse their brands. And no I don't change my oil every 7500 miles as my owner manual recommends on my truck. I change it every 3500-4000. This is my choice. And yes with 213,000 on my 94 Sierra I've always used Wallys 10-30 Tech Oil. Meets or exceeds mfg specs. Go figure! Meets or exceeds. Hmmm
