Here are my favorites in Central KY. I live in Nick Vegas

Please share yours -

1. Kentucky River - Sulphur Well, Nonesuch, Camp Nelson or High Bridge (Dix)- the rock bars are the obvious places, but more fish are on the timbery/muddy side from what I can tell. Med depth cranks and small spinnerbaits have been lethal this year.

2. Willisburg Lake - Awesome little lake and holds big fish. Rat'l traps, gitzits, etc have all produced.

3. Taylorsville - caught some great bass there over the past few summers. Literally dragging a texas rigged worm over muddy flats has worked best for me and finding isolated pieces of timber.

4. Herrington - eh.. hard to fish and its full of idiots, but its close by. Very hard to fish and Ive never ever figured out any consistency to that place.

5. Cedar Creek - Would be my favorite if not for all the common jack@sses running up and washing you or trying to knock you off your bank. Small t-rigs, big jigs and DT series cranks have produced the biggest fish Ive caught there.

6. Hickman Creek - for days I don't feel like getting killed on gas prices, nothing beats 4lb line and 30 + smallies on a nice day's hike. My brother owns a good bit of land on both sides of Hickman in Jessamine County, so its very accessible. There are a lot of baits that work, but there is one that stands alone - the old skool 'rattlesnake' brand gitzit with a 1/32 jig head inserted with the eyelet protruding. great action.

Ok - right now, with the heat getting ridiculous and we've started getting less rain, what tactics are you all using in lakes?

I like lighter outfits for this time of year, 6-8lb test, 1/16th to 1/8th oz texas rigged lizards, senkos, roboworms, etc. My next rod usually has 10 lb line and a mid to deep running crank, such as a DT 10-16, etc.

If all else fails, a white grub on a 1/8th is my 'go to' bait, or a small frame (mini king type) spinnerbait fished real slow.

Anyone else care to share their favorite spots and tactics?

im using Lucky Craft cranks,jigs and worms,topwater in the mornings and thats it on all lakes...guna start throwin that deep swimbait though

The hotter it gets I find it hard to beat a good ol' texas riged power worm in tequila sunrise color... an oldie but a goodie!

I like to fish mine a little differently, rather than pulling it off the botom and letting it sink real slow, or slowly dragging it in, I let it sink to the bottom for 2-3 seconds and then give it three, quick, hard sideways jerks then let it settle back for 2-3 seconds and repeat, all the way back to the boat... its decent in lakes when bass are holding in 20 ft or less, but in a pond, creek pools, or river flats its untouchble till september!

I live the same place (Jessamine Co.), and those would probably be all of my nearby favorites as well. The problem for me is I haven't done a lot of fishing over the last year or so and I really don't know how to fish any of them real well....other than Cedar Creek, but it's like a circus down there.

I've been to Hickman twice this year and really didn't catch anything.

The one or two times I've tried the river it was the same story.

The issue is probably that I'm just not very good at fishing. Also, it's harder to hit a bunch of spots in my kayak.

I'll share one, since I doubt I'll ever be back. Energy lake, its in LBL, a no wake lake, and in the fall, when that lake is down , if you have a smaller boat with OARS remember those? You can catch all the bass you want way back before you get to the refuge area. We used to camp there and I had one of those porta botes, 20 bass in a little over two hours was my best.Flukes or buzz baits over the grass, and hang on, if you need to use your big boat, lots of luck, those weeds will kill that battery in nothing flat.

Yes...

I'd go back and take a certain little wading creek off there, but that's just me. Everybody and their brother has heard about Elkhorn and Stoner...and they are quite a bit bigger...but some of the smaller ones don't need anymore traffic. They aren't big enough for a crowd and it can do more harm to the fishing than good. I'm not trying to be a butt head, but think about it...and keep some of those cards in your pocket for small talk with friends.

too late, can't edit. And it gets plenty of traffic, we have to run people off trying to take stringerfulls of short fish out of there.

But most of the water that's really, really good takes a good bit of walking (and guts) to get to IMO.

I also live in nich Vegas.. Just bought a 14' jinny that's not yet ready for the water love elkhorn and hickman... Just out of curiosity is there anywhere to get access and possibley catch any fish in jessamine creek?

I don't often share, but I'm in a good mood tonight. I too like to downsize and fish light gear. Here are my top 5 favorite places to fish.
1) Stoner Creek- Either Ike's or Frymans from my boat or other sections by wading. Fish any kind of baits with success, but like topwater around cover.
2) Licking River- Great smallies with my top producing baits are rebel craws, small spinners or a 4" lizards with a splitshot.
3) Cedar Creek- I fish out of a 14' aluminum boat and get back inside the trees. Mostly fishing topwater and soft plastics. Just caught 25 pounds of bass in 30 minutes on Memorial day while everybody else was run the lake. Caught 'em on senkos and lizards.
4) Dix River- Below the dam to the Ky River. Jigs and shad raps are staples, but with the right conditions jerk baits can load a boat.
5) KY River- High Bridge, Boonesborough or Clays Ferry. The thing I like about the river is that it is always capable of producing big fish. I like crankbaits and soft plastics.

Hope this helps. Now that it is heating up, I like to look for grass beds and throw a frog.
