Ohio River Trip Wednesday 23 July

Launched from Greenwood Ramp at 230 pm Wednesday. Ramp is in excellent shape. Water was stained brown mud color. Ran to PSI plant. Was happy to see zero barges tied up at the PSI discharge. Tied up against the wall and the mooring drum at PSI. Used night crawlers on carolina rigs with light 1/2 ounce sinker, and same rigs with small 3 to 3 1/2 inch shiners. Bite was fast and furious for about 2 hours from 330 pm to 530 pm. Caught small Stripers, Hybrids, Sauger, Drum, Skipjack herring, and 3-4 pound channel cats. Left there and ran to the dam fishing that area from 6 pm to about 10 pm. Only gate open were the uppers, and no hydros, nor the bear traps were dumping water. Water color was stained green. Ran heavier rigs behind the hydros, and anchored in the stronger curent path. Use 3 ounce sinker, and fished amall shiners and skipjack herring fillets. Ended up there with 3 soft shell turtles, a couple 4-5 pound drum, a great 8.5 pound hybrid, a couple small catfish, and a couple more 1-2 pound Stripers. REturned to the PSI to fish from 11 pm to 1 am, and used skipjack, night crawlers and shiners again to score some more hybrids, sauger, catfish, drum, and a gar for good measure. As the PSI folks started to dredge up river from us, the fishing shut down and we called it a night.

Overall river is in fair shape, stained color from mud to green, current was moderate and easy to handle, no major debris, some small debris mainly on the KY side due to the prevailing winds for the day

As we passed them, New Albany Park Ramp and Clarksville Ramp at the dam behind the hydros were open and in great shape.

Re: Ohio River Trip Wednesday 23 July

Thanks for the great post. I was on the river Wed and Thurs morning from about 6:30 AM to 1:00 PM

The bite turned off completely once the sun was really up.

I too caught a softshell turtle a couple of trips ago. I could never figure out what the heck was on my line till I got him up to the boat.

I haven't had luck in catching skips up by the hydros. Tried a Sabiki rig and that didn't work. Continued on catfishing with livers sprinkled with Garlic Salt. Caught more than we wanted to clean so let all of them back into the river A.S.A.P. Practiced catch and release both days.

We caught several 5 to 7 pound whites/stripers below the hydros on Wed. morning on livers. What a fight they make in that current!!

I launch from the New Albany ramp. Today the New Albany Fire and Rescue squad were practicing some drills. I apologize to any people on that squad, but it sure looked like Larry and his two brothers Darryl and Darryl trying to recover their inflatable. I just idled away from the ramp watching their circus.
