    Has anyone fished this lake

Hi I'm new to this forum and was wondering if anyone has fished Wood Creek Lake or Laurel River Lake much? I live about 50 to 60 miles east of Wood Creek and the closes couple of lakes to me are small and was thinking of give them a try. I know that Laurel River Lake was a great place to fish years ago but haven't fished it in years. 12 or so I think. And unless it has been broken here lately the world record smallmouth came from there in the 50's. 1955 I think at 11 lbs 15 oz. Thats a smallie lol More interested in Wood Creek Lake just because it is alittle closer. All opinions welcome, Thanks DJ

Yeah, your right. Sorry bout that. The state record smallmouth 8.46 lbs was caught on the Laruel River Lake. Just a question which state got the credit for the world record Tn or Ky?

Both lakes are extremly tough right now. average tourny at woodscreeek is yeilding a mere 3 to 4 lb bags. we fished the other night and ended up catching 8 or 9 fish but only one keeper largemouth. laurel is producing better fish but unless you fish it reguarly she can be brutal. depending on which way your coming i would probably try dale hollow or cumberland.

Thanks for all the great post guys. DJD, yeah I read that post from Andy. Now that's a fish. Andy, yeah it's alittle out of the way. I have a could of lakes around here to fish ( Buckhorn Lake and Carr's Creek ) but notthing big has came from either of them, well not bass anyway big musky and cats just not bass. Thats why I was thinking about Wood Creek. Oh by the way congrats on that monster bass. Dcbasser, I'm coming from Hazard, east of london. Cumberland and Dale Hollow would be farther to drive. Would still like to try them though. Thanks DJ

Let me know when you plan on coming this way. I'll try to give you some info on whats going on to the best of my ability. We usually fish one or the other at least once a week. Long haul from hazard to take a chance on these two. Even the regular 3 a week fisherman are struggling with them. However a lot of little fish are being caught out of woodscreek ( 10-13 inch) and it doesn't yield very many smallmouth. Once the weather starts cooling down in mid to lat sept. laurel would be a real nice choice. Them monster smallies and largemouth will be turning on at night. Just send me a p.m and i'll try to help you out.

He should have took it to the marina and let them put it on the scales, most likely would have been a lake record. I have hear of several bass caught out of there in four and five lbs range but noone has them weight and recorded. The last year the lakes best was posted at the marina was 4lbs 7ozs. May have changed since then though. I haven't been inside the marina at Buckhorn in a long time. I try to make sure I have everything I need before I get to the Lake because I know it costs twice as much to get it there....lol

Just for informational purposes only, you were correct for a couple of years in that the state record Smallie did come out of Laurel Lake. The deal was that the 11lb 15oz David Hayes fish of October 1955 went under scrutiny a few years back with allegations that there was boat motor parts shoved down the fish to make it weigh more than it actually did. Not by Mr. Hayes but by someone else (I think a brother in law but don't quote me) supposively did this. When the allegations was brought forth, Ky actually disqualified the fish and went with the 8.something from Laurel Lake as the state record. TN never did disqualify the fish and after further investigations and some sworn statements that were uncovered, the Hayes fish was re-established by Ky. Hayes caught the fish just outside of Illwill Creek that is in reciprocating water at Dale that borders both Ky and Tn and therefore can be recognized as the state record for both states. Billy Westmoreland swears that he had the "New" record fish on Christmas Day several years ago but after a 20 minute struggle and 4lb test line the fish won (this came from Bobby Westmoreland and for all of you that know Bobby, take that with a grain of salt, but I sure do hope Billy did have a shot at "this" fish because nobody deserved it more than him) There is some more useless fish information taking up my already limited brain ability.

Re: Has anyone fished this lake

My brothers and I ended up going to Wood Creek Lodge a couple weekends ago. Youngest bro and I got there on Thurs nite while tourney was going on. When I heard it only took 3lbs to win, I was amazed.

We had a great weekend cranking, caught 9 Thursday night (4 keepers) nothing all day Friday and all night, 12 Sat. morning (5 keepers) 10 Sat. nite (3 keepers) and did not fish Sunday morning as we were exhausted from 3 hours of sleep at a time.

I really loved the Wood Creek lodge, everyone was friendly at the lodge and Dock, the fishermen we encountered were courteous and the lake was awesome. I highly recommend it. Just call the lodge and the lady will hook you up. It was a great trip.
