Another tale from the Cumberland River

Well...I have now resigned myself to fact that everytime I go to CR something will happen that makes it a challenging trip. I've lost a trolling motor, keys, had the jeep broken into, lost a rod/reel, been stuck down river a few miles because the water level went down and didn't come back for many...many...many hours! But Saturday I almost lost it all!

We put in at 5:15 am and I thought sense helms landing wasn't crowded we'd drop the boat in the water anchor it out in the middle of the river and we'd fish the landing for a while. By 5:20 am my boat was under water. Yep...in all my excitement to fish I forgot to put the plug in the boat! I spent the next 30 minutes bailing water by the bucket loads.

We did catch fish, but the bite was slower than usually. Bright sunny day without a cloud in the sky didn't help much. The river was crowded Saturday...there were 19 cars/trucks just at helms @ 2:00.

Maybe I could make just enough to replace my "waterproof" trickle charger bolted in the back of the boat that isn't THAT waterproof.

LOL! I'm laughing with ya brother not at ya! Been there done that with the plug except we were in the middle of Lake Kissimmee in Florida (al-e-gators galore) and had to dunk my head in the water to reach that Ranger plug hole which is recessed. I just knew a gator was gonna get me!!

Very few gys can say they havn't forgotten that drain plug. I've tried to launch with the rear tie downs still fastened, in a hurry because the ramp was crowded. Worst mistake I ever saw was a guy launch his boat and truck in a swift current, thank the lord the truck got stuck on a sand bar close enough for a tow trruck to get it. Its partof the game, even pros do things they dont want to talk about, like the guide we hired who left his rain gear at home, thinking it was in a compartment in the boat.This wasn't a warm rainy day rain either. When he got soaked, we told him to take us in, he took us another day.

FYI....The corp reduced waterflow today in the river as the lake came nearer 680. Boaters beware.

The plug thing...oh yeah the first bass boat I had so excited took the family to Barren... boat in the water go park the SUV....come back only half a boat visible....wife laughs but an evil laugh....hook a rope to boat.....pull boat out bail and pray the day will end.

Not the river but dale maybe last year at the state dock, a guy left his aerator running while they went to have lunch.I noticed a minnow bucket floating when I started the approach to the ramp, then a boat seat. the live well over filled, and the boat was almost under water. A good tip, if you are parking it for awhile make sure that thing is turned off, if yopu dont have an automatic bilge pump!

I'm glad to know there are others out there who feel my pain...the worst part of all this was there was a guy on the bank who was fishing and watching the whole thing materialize...he never said a word...just laughed.

The part I didn't add was that I tripped over a rock and fell in the river later that day...waders were full of 50 degree water. Even with all that it was good day to be on the water.

Thankfully nothing bad happened, but some of the best times can be had by sitting at a boat ramp on Saturday afternoon and watching everyone pull out. It can be quite entertaining.

Well I witnessed/participated in all this tom foolery. I couldn't stand it that I had fell in prior to Troutcrazy. Although I had a good 16-18 inch bow on when I fell. While I was drying off I so kindly pointed out to TC where I was catchin' at. Moments later TC gets a good CR bath! Guess what? We fell over the same rock. It's the only rock of that size that we saw all day and we both fell over it. Yep, the Dynamic Duo. We were blessed,No real big accidents.
