So after busting 1/4 inch ice out of the Elkhorn to get to the river, Billy goes ahead and lands a 7+ lb Drum just as I was making fun of his linel. He uses Eagle Claw 4lb test that has the diameter of 10lb test and is as old as the hills but it does work. I thought he was grandstanding this fish because it never came up until she was in the net. He then caught a 2 lb Smallie that he said was one of his bieggest iin the river to date. That pretty much ruint me. When I cast at dale, I am expecting a 5+ and then some to hit not a 15 incher. To each is own but I will stick to dale for the future unless I get desperate to wet a line close.

Note about Billy's 4lb line. Eagle Claw brand (which I have NEVER seen before) and this stuff may say 4lb on the spool but I think Billy had some 17lb spooled on it because he not only hooked but reeled in more tree trunks than anyone I ever seen with the stuff.

Billy had me on this river / creek fishing right up to when I was about to net his 2 pounder and he said it was the biggest he had ever caught on the river. Dale Hollow has flat out spoiled me in that every cast I make there, I expect to bring in a 4+ pounder and I expect to catch a 5+ pounder every day on the water. Counting last thur and fri. I have 3 over 6lbs, a good 30 or so over 5, and no telling maybe 50 or so over 4lbs at Dale and 99% of all of these were on the fly. Maybe if I got me an 8 ft FNF rod and used 4lb test it would be different but Billy will have to do some work to get me to go to the river when it is 16 degrees and I am breaking ice with my boat in Elkhorn trying to get to the river. One thing about fishing is that everybody has their favorite way, species, or technique. Mine happens to be FNF at Dale Hollow and there is a large gap to 2nd place.

Re: Ask Elwood about my 4LB line....

He probably meant that was the best brown one he had ever caught out of the Ky river, but believe me he's caught a ton of them better than that out of the Elkhorn. Now you aren't gonna catch a bunch of 4 and 5lber's but there are fish caught out of that creek that size. The first and only time I ever waded Elkhorn with Billy and APB I caught a nice 18 1/4 inch smallmouth that probably would have weighed a little over three pound. However that day we caught them till our arms was tired and many of them were 14 to 15 inch fatties. Now another thing is using light tackle and the fact that those creek fish are flat out honery and mean they put up one heck of a fight. I like smacking them ole bigguns too, I to have a bunch over five pound and I don't even have a guess how many between 4 and 5 I have, it would be a BUNCH. But that creek thing can be awful fun if you hit it right. You are correct though we all ahve our strengths and favorites. I've got riverat12 trying to make a pro catfisherman out of me and it's fun. I've got APB trying to make a striper fisherman out of me and it's alot of fun to. But nothing and I mean nothing will ever make me forget about my ole brown fish.

After a couple of hours of nothing, I was wishing that a 5lb turd would float downstream and bump into my jig. I would have even taken a 1lb turd full of corn by noon.

If you saw how thick the ice was that we broke trying to get back up the 100 yards or so from the river into Elkhorn to the ramp you would have thought it was the North Pole. I know the ice was 3/4 inch thick and was solid from bank to bank. This was severely thicker than when we put in for it was only about a 1/4 inch or so and defineately go thicker as the day went on. After we got my beast on the trailer and up the "Ramp" there was 2 huge pieces stuck on top of the trailer under the boat about 3' by 4' and 3/4 inch thick. I do know I was flat out Cold and I had several layers on top and bottom.
