Bank fishing the Ohio

I just graduated from UK and moved home to Louisville and my only real winter fishing opportunity is sauger and walleye fishing in the Ohio. I am curious as to whether or not there is any good bank fishing near the Falls. I have fished for sauger before and have read up on what everyone on here has had luck on but I'm just not sure where to fish or even if there is any point to bank fishing down there. Any direction would be greatly appreciated, I will definitely be giving it a try soon, would just like to have an idea of where to fish. This year has been pretty slow for saugar. Last year even I killed them and I pretty much **** at fishing. We in the Louisville area are really blessed with such a great fishing hole as the falls so close to home. It takes some practice to be able to get out there and consistantly get on fish no matter the conditions and that will only come from time on the water and with a little guidance from members on here that know what they are doing. Sometimes though the fishing can be so good down there that it doesnt take much more then an ignoramous to catch fish!

I've fished down there at the Falls many a time, but haven't been there lately...been too busy with duck season. Anyhow, I usually take a baitcaster and a spinning rod, and a small box with some white curly tail grubs and a few topwaters like a Pop R or a Zara Spook. Usually the white curly tail grubs are all you need. A variety of jig heads helps too, so you can use heavier weights in heavier current. Main thing to look for is white water and eddies. Sauger, white bass, largemouth, smallmouth, hybrids, drum, and catfish are all common on that white curly tail grub. Don't be afraid to fish shallow white water either...that was my first mistake when I started fishing down there, I was too far downstream and wasn't up in the white water where all the baitfish hang out.

I usually only go out there when the water is fairly low and all of the fossil beds are exposed. If the water is over the fossil beds, it's hard to get to the good white water, and pretty much pointless, or at least that's been the case for me.

Right now with the water being up the ticket is to find a creek somewhere that flows into the river. Look for the area where the clear water meets the mud and fish that area with minnows on a slip bobber if the area is congested with drift wood. If its clear of debrie which I dought feel free to throw about anything, for everything. Alot of fish tend to get out of the main stem of the river for logical reasons. An old trick I use back up these creeks when cluttered with driftwood is pack several yards of trout line or heavy line with a treble hook attached, throw over large floating limbs and pull to one side and tie it off to something and you have a fishing hole for a while. Be sure to remove all the line and hook when you leave, just be careful...Good luck Chuck

saturday we fished the mouth of colgate and there was a small pool of clear water at the first log jam. we caught four 12-13 inch smallmouth one spotted bass and one sauger around 15inches. for around four hours i was the only one there.(very peaceful). after it slowed down a beaver cme from out of the river and basicly ramn me off. it sit on a rock and stared me down for around five minutes and was smacking his tail on the surface. i have no ideal on the behavior of beavers and i dont know if they will chase humans but i didnt hang around to find out.LOL ill be down friday and sat fish fry let me know what time youll be down and i can share with you what i know and hopefully we might catch a few.

haha we had an encounter with a beaver at the cumberland river similar to this but there were 6 of us so it ran off, got some good pictures though...i plan on going down sometime friday morning if its not too rainy and windy, where is colgate in relationship to the falls of ohio park and where do you park? i drove down there last week and saw the parking lot at the falls but am not familiar with any other areas.
