You fishing a tournament? I have been to Wheeler several times and it is one of my favorites.
That time of year could be hit or miss, I know I've been to Florida that time of year, northern fl and froze. Never been their but you cant go wrong with fishing any of the tva lakes, Hopefully you can catch some big females heading in early, and if thats the case all I can say is rattletrap chrome/blue!
Go below the dam when the hydro is running. It's great for strippers and smallmouth. Either from a boat or on foot both are great.
February is too early to think about bass fishing at Wheeler.
Anyway, the Decatur Flats area just gets pounded as most consistent bass area in the entire lake. This place is nowhere to be when tournaments are going on, they all fight for the same spots and its been GPS'd to death.
Now the tailwater fishing on the Lake Wilson side is a very interesting experience, but again February is a little early. Hybrid stripers and stripers are there, and some sauger too...
Early April is the best for the tailwater, then it slows down till October. This is on the Lake Wilson side though. Lake Wilson tailwater on the Pickwick side is very good too.
You will catch any predator in the lake in the tailwater at the proper time. Smallmouth Bass, Stripers, Hybrids, Drum, and Flatheads are the main haul.
If you want to go farther and have better fishing, Lake Falcon at Zapata Texas on zee border they will be spawing then.
East Texas has a bunch of lakes to consider that are closer. Caddo, Lake O Pines, Bob Sandlin, Monticello (powerplant lake) is just off of Sandlin, Lake Fork (too popular), Tyler Texas lakes (2 connected), Nacogdoches, Sam Rayburn (Huge Lake), Toledo Bend (even bigger).
West Louisiana has a bunch of lakes too, very interesting area of the country that you don't hear about the lakes, but they are loaded and plentifil within driving distance of Shreveport.
