Went to Patoka and headed way way way up the creek (thats a job on patoka with the timber) found unseasonably warm water 54 degrees, caught 4 bass only 1 a keeper, 1 crappie and 1 wiper. All fish were 4ft or less, all on spinnerbait. Heavy winds SSW all day, little to no rain, and the afternoon the sun was out, awesome weather, felt good to be out.

How far up is way way way up? which side of the lake, Lick Fork or the river?

I went up the patoka river just about as far as i could, it's a long trip from walls ramp, but i found a few fish and it was fun.

i went just up to the old bridge and thats as far as i went, thats the farthest i ever been, i was talking to a guy today who fishes patoka alot and he said their is better fishing beyond the concrete bridge? Anyway it was fun and i should be into fish for the federation in two weeks???

I was on the lake today and tore the crappies up. Water temp was 52 to 53 and the fish were caught 14 to18 INCHES deep. Jig under a bobber. Two biggest were 12 1/2 with lots of 11s.

Panfish, you said only stipers and white bass? Well i thought they spawned together and made the hybrid, wiper?? Do they not do that for some reason at patoka? If not why at other places? Thanks I wasn't aware.

I am sure there is someone on here who knows why this doesn't occur in the wild but just like the saugeyes the wipers are all stocked. Even the stripers do not reproduce in MOST lakes.

Panfish and raporter are correct. Stripers, and hybrid stripers (wiper) do not successfully spawn in Indiana, or in 99% of the freshwater lakes where they exist. I could bore you till you cry on the biology and spawning of stripers and hybrids, but I'll just give you the abridged version.
Once fertilized, a striper egg has to stay suspended for a couple of days, in moving water, of a certain temperature, and salinity. If they touch the sediment of the bottom, they are finished. There are very few places where river systems allow for this. I believe the calculation equates to 35 miles of river with a average speed of 2mph of flow. Lake Texoma (Red river I believe), and lake Mead are two of the places where the striper spawn is very successful. There are also some documented successful spawns in some of the river systems of the south. Cumberland river is one example.

A hybrid is a cross between a striper and a white bass. The cross can be male white bass/female striper (most common) or a male striper/female white bass. Hybrids do not reproduce in the wild. Now, like most things in nature, oddities can happen, but not enough to produce a fishable or viable population.

Juvenile striper, white bass, and a hybrid can be hard to tell apart. Typically, hybrids carry broken lines, where the striper does not. The only for sure way to tell the difference is to look at the tooth patches on their tongue.

Cool i learned something, that's why I'm on this site to share and learn. So the hybrid wiper is made in a man made environment then stocked in reservoirs?? Is that how it works, then when a striped bass dies and they dont restock, the striper population takes a dive, unless it's one of the few lakes that have a spawn?? Sweet thanks for the input.
