My Dad has booked a striper adventure with his accountant and we have never fished for striper before. We are to supply our own gear. Help! What type of gear do I need? Everything from reels, rods, bait, line, and etc...let me know your thoughts. Thanks!
You should really consider going with a guide if that's the case - you'll save money and catch more fish.
Come to a Ky Striper Club meeting second Monday of every month.

On Hubbards lane in the basement of the bank across the street from McDonalds by the Target they just tore down at Hubbards and Westport rd.--Louisville
I'm a guide on Cumberland and I'm not trying to drum up cheap business for myself, but you'll be money ahead if you hire a guide and tell him up front that you want a tutorial on striper fishing basics. It will save you enormous amounts of time on the learning curve. There are lots of good guides on this lake, pick one out that sounds good to you and ask questions. Good luck, Phil www.conleystriper.com
You will be money ahead and learn more if you go out with a guide the first time. You can learn the what, when and where as well as what(hopefully) active fish look like on a graph.
I agree the guide thing would be the way I would go personally. His accountant goes with a group of guys every year. They know the lake and they know how and where to do the fishing. We are invitees only and I wouldn't turn down a free fishing trip. Crappie is my fish but I'm sure I'll be hooked on stripers too. I also don't wanna show up unprepared. I'm told everything supplied except personal gear! Just need to know what gear you guys are using. JoeB I will definitely keep you in mind when I do (my trips).
Witchita,
The date the trip is to take place is important. Stripers do have feeding patterns and behaviors depending on time of year, which then dictates the tactics you must use to get them, which in turn dictates what type of gear to go with.
Are you looking to fish at night for the topwater bite, or trying to catch them surface feeding in the jumps, interested in bottom fishing for them, or trolling live bait, or trolling artificial baits at depth under downriggers? See what I mean? The time of year, tells you how to fish, and then what gear you need to support that.
For this reason, I completely agree with hiring a guide for a first time trip. I did.
We'd agree Dad will be a winner in his accountants eye's if they get on some fish, and land a few for photo opportunities, right? And a bonus would be learning something about the fish species, the equipment it takes to catch them, the tactics it takes during certain times of the year, the lake, and even the boat type that can make fishing for Stripers a bit easier, or more comfortable. For these reason's, I'd also recommend hiring a guide.
Now lets put the 2 ideas together. You and Dad hire a guide and go alone BEFORE the accountant trip. Learn first hand what it takes to do it right, then armed with that knowledge, outfit Dad's boat, and get the gear you now have seen in action. Then Dad takes the accountant out by himself and demonstrates his new found, guide taught knowledge. Dad will look like an expert. And the bonus is if the first trip goes well, when the accountant wants to go again, Dad will be set up with the gear and knowledge to be a winner again.
Best wishes!
Man.....do you ever make this place sound like an attractive part of town to be in after dark.......Give the kid a simple street address and let him goggle it.

What equipment do you have now?

Man I'm setup strictly as a crappie man. I have a Amb. 5600 Rocket and a 7 foot medium/heavy ugly stick. Think I'll pickup one more combo like that. We'll going in May and i'm waiting on them to discuss what type fishing they do. These guys are seasoned and I'm the guest. I will be talking with them soon but just wanted some infoon what you other guys use before hand.
Your 5600/ugly stick combo will do fine for night fishing for them. 15# mono and you are good to go. There is another thread on striper fishing where we've been discussing striper methods for May. The rest of the info you need on gear and methods is in that one.
