Smile KY Lake - I Just Hate Wind

Was doing a little pre-fishing if you will yesterday and went to Paris Landing to put in, I was going to try to be brave and make the trek to New Johnsonville by water, as i was at the gas station by Paris Landing state park the lady said be careful there's 30 mph winds out of the west, I looked outside and thought "it's barely blowing", HA! we put in and took off went under the bridge to head south and as my boat was completely out of the water for the second or was it the third time, in a row I thought "What the heck",

As I settled the boat back down and thought of the movie "The Perfect Storm" as I was climbing the next wave losing all site of land and getting sprayed in the face and my forehead freezing and going numb, I looked at my partner and said "this ain't going to happen today! i hung a right and headed toward big sandy. The funny thing is I wasn't a hundred yards from the bridge yet it felt like 3 miles. Needles to say The entrance to Big Sandy has a wide open stretch of water that opens up to the right - you guessed it to the west, yes the west where this 30 mph winds where "supposed" to be blowing from - and they were.

After what felt like 2 hours getting to my spot (which was actually less than 10 minutes) we fished a lead in bank and caught a mess of fish, we caught them on everything we threw for a 50 yard stretch, we were facing into the wind with 2 to 3 ft rollers bouncing us violently around - but we were catching fish!!!!! That was the first time I had stuck it out in the wind and waves and it paid off, we won our "dash for cash" buddy tournament, with 14 lbs and had the only limit, I fish with a real old club - Murray Bass Club and we have a blast the weigh in's are what makes it you actually never know who has the fish to win and it changes from tourney to tourney - but you better catch some or you'll be looking up all the time.

Productive lures: Jewel finesse 3/4 oz watermelon candy jigs with paca craw trailers, lipless baits in Black/Chrome and Sexy Shad, 3/8 oz spinners in blue glimmer, and My FAVORITE - 3/16th oz shakey head with watermelon candy trick worm.

(Fishing the 3/16th oz was very - VERY tough but the wind moved the bait yet it was lust heavy enough to keep contact) but my biggest tool was my Carrot Stick with the InvizX line on the symetre reel!!! I still felt everything

I live on the West side and the way the wind was blowing everything looked Okay, I know from living on the lake if it blows from the West stay too the West and vice versa, North and South all bets are off. Everything was fine until I went under the 79 bridge and whooo hoooo it was on. I have seen a lot worse - just not as cold in a while, when I swung back West and got closer to the bank it was smooth and in some places slick even. No I'm not insane (I think) and I wasn't the only boat out, there were probably 5 to 10 others that I seen and some were in aluminum boats (smaller ones - tracker style). I knew my limitations and I knew when wrong was wrong so I headed to safer waters.

Oh there is no way I would want the responsibilities of watching over someone else while being out like that. Some people don't understand they think waves are waves but they are not created equal - you may have been fishing for them instead.

Re: KY Lake - I Just Hate Wind

Is there any way we can outlaw the wind down there? Maybe dip into the Governments stimulas and build a big wind break south of Paris. lol
well I will be on blood 4/13-4/25 or longer and have 3 brand new batteries so im ready. I have been thinkin about going green and just installin a sail on my 201 pro. I bet I could get it on plane on this lake if I did it right. So if you see a black Stratus with a sail come say hi that would be me lol.
Good luck and be safe all

That is one reason I am reluctant to do the BFL's as a non-boater. Afraid of drawing someone who doesn't know what they are doing and just 'goes for it'. I've been on that lake when I shouldn't. There was one time we were fishing out of a 15.5ft bass boat and the waves would occasionally crash over the side. I was catching some big fish on rattletraps and my partner couldn't catch anything and he was pissed. He said let me in the front of the boat and when he tried to throw into the wind the lure went sailing back past us and he had a very bad backlash. When he picked it out, he gave it a hard jerk to get it off the bottom and a 6 pounder nailed it... Was a crazy day!!

It get real wicked around the 68 bridge near Kenlake. Was up there years ago and swamped a boat thank god for the newer bass boats had I been in one of the old bomber style it would have went to the bottom. Then last year was across the lake in the morning water was fine within a couple hours had huge rollers I was across from Blood made it back over after taking a bath and a few spine adjustments. But the thing is I have had some of my better days fishing when the lake was like that esp on weekends when its busy cause if you dont have a big low bass boat with a good troll you cant fish so alot of the good water in Blood is free.
