    Hybirds and Chicken Liver

Okay, so I heard time and time again about how the hybirds just love the ole' Chicken liver. I talked to someone from KDFW and they said when they raise them in the hatchery all they get to eat is chicken liver. SO..... Normally I only use Chix Liver when fishing for Mr. Whisker but.... I would like to try using this bait to catch hybrids. Now for my question! What is your preferred method for Hybrid Fishing with Chix Liver? Do you tight line like for catfish? Do you slow troll under a balloon or float? Do you jig it up and down around points and drop offs? Has anyone really used this bait and had success( I don't mean "We where catfishing and bamn we caught a huge hybrid on chix liver")? Any thoughts would be great!!!

I never specifically targeted Hybrids with Chicken Liver, but while bottom fishing for catfish I have caught quite a few hybrids out of Taylorsville,Barren River, and Grayson and two stripers (out of Lake Cumberland).I'd say you would do better if you fished the particular depth they happened to be in though.

You can't hardly keep the small Hybrids off chicken livers at Barren tailwaters and I've also caught plenty of whites at Nolin on chicken livers. You will catch a few of the bigger boys on livers but mostly the smaller ones seem to prefer them. My best on livers was a 11 pounder at Barren while catfishing one night.

As far as how to fish them I've found they seem to like them to sink slowly for some reason so try using the smallest egg sinker to get the livers to sink slowly placed about 15" above your hook.

    They will bite them.

    Good luck.

    Re: Hybirds and Chicken Liver

I have fished the Barren Tailwaters off and on again for a couple years. I had had moderate success throwing live shiners under a float, but it was very "moderate" at that. Well, last May I went to see how the fishing was and came across an older guy who was fishing off the walk-ways. I watched him catch one hybrid after another, and I was amazed! I had never seen anybody catch them like that at the spill way. Needless to say, I made my way over closer to him and we started talking. I was in dis-belief when he said that he was using chicken livers! I couldn't believe it! And sure enough, I watched him pull his chicken liver out of his little container, put it on the hook, and catch another 6 lb hybrid! Long story short, I made a v-line up to the market and bought a thing of chicken livers. Ended up catching more hybrids in that one afternoon than I had caughten there the entire time I had fished there before!

Here is what I was doing with my chicken livers in order to catch those hybrids. First, use 12-14 lb fluro. Second, attach a good size 10-12 treble, and attach a sinker heavy enough to get you down to the bottom, about 8-10" above trebel. This was key, GET ON THE BOTTOM!!! I used those twist on weights cause of their slim shape, helps avoid snagging the bottom rocks. Putting your chicken livers on cotton balls helps dry them out and keep them on your hook better (FYI). The best time to fish this is when they are letting out a good amount of water from the spill way. stand down on the rock shoreline and cast diagonally upward and across the river. You'll feel the weight bouncing along the bottom as it head downstream. KEEP IN TOUCH WITH YOUR LINE!!! This is key. The hybrids won't always smash it, sometimes it will be light. You'll lose quite a few hooks and weights doing this, so have plenty with you. IT'S A BLAST THOUGH!!! CAN'T WAIT TO DO IT AGAIN THIS YEAR!!! GOOD LUCK!!!

In late October, we caught and released a boat load of hybrids while jug fishing with chicken livers. We placed a sinker up about 6" from the hook and the jug line was about 4-5 ft long. If you want to have some fun, try catching a jug with a big hybrid or striper on it. It's like trying to catch a rocket that dives underwater and comes up on the other side of the boat or 50 ft. from you.

Our trip was early in the morning, the water was COLD, and the hybrids were really hungry. I wouldn't mind doing it again before the water warms up.

    Re: Hybirds and Chicken Liver

A few weeks ago me and two buddies went to t-ville and limited out. We only used chicken livers. We went in the middle of the night so all the boat traffic would be gone. They caught fire at about 1:30am. Hybrids fight hard and it was a blast, all 45 of them. We were tight lining with an egg sinker about 4 feet above the hook. We had to have the hook completly covered or they would not hit it. We caught some small ones and some decent ones (about 5 lbs.) but nothing huge.

I don't know if others have said this yet or not, but you need to set on these things like right now if you don't want to gut hook them. If possible, use a circle hook. Noone like s to gut hook fish especially if they are catch and release. Cirlce hooks will cut down on the gut hooked fish.
