    Carolina crankin

I have done this two times and cought quality fish. Once was at barren I cought 2 good keepers about 3.lbs and then I got hung up and was to lazy to retie. Then the same thing happend at taylorsville got two good keepers real fast then got hung and did not retie again. It is a good way to catch fish but you get hung alot and you lose your bait and both times I lost my beeds, swivel, and sinker. So I was looking at every time I do this I will lose any where from $7.00 to $10.00 gurinteed. I would like to do this more but don't want to lose money and baits. If any of you all do this type of fishin and know a way to keep from getting snaged alot or two keep from loseing baits please let me know. And if there ant a way to keep from doing it can you get away with cheeper cranks with the results so it don't hert the pockit as bad.

    thanks

One thing you can do when you go into a sporting good store and they have those bargain bins and they are unloading a buch of lures that didn't sell. Look for those that would serve you well with this purpose in mind. I have found some good ones for this and cheap.

i have tried this only once (about 15 minutes) without any luck. this is a very interesting topic i would like to hear more about. how fast do you work the baits? do you keep a steady reel once you hit bottom or do you work it as if you were using plastics? what size crank do you use and what depth of crank do you use? if any of you guys could give a little in depth detail about this, it would be much appreciated. thanks!

i would try some braided line around 75 pound test i have fished plastics and jig and have not lost one yet but have strighten out a lot of hooks dont know if a crank would hold up to the pressure or not but its worth a shot also try cutting the the hook that turns down in the front

I also haven't done this and would like to try it, but it seen like what hanging up is the weight. There are weights that are made to where they will pull over rocks better then others, you guys know more about the sizes and shapes of these then I do I'll sure. Also you could use a bumper, you know one of them things that you drop down your line, to pop it loose.

What I was doing was useing was nothing that ran no more then 4 feet and as far as retrive I would use a slow steady retrive or a side sweep kinda deel pull and stop pull and stop both work but I am no expert I have only done it twice but I do belive in this type of fishin just don't know if the risk is worth the reward. I am going to pittle around with this and try to perfect it as good as posable so I will try diffrent sinkers, hooks and diffrent running depth cranks when I get it down I will let you all know what is best. But please give diffrent ideas if you have any and when I get a chance I will give it a try.

    Thanks

I would guess a floating crankbait like a floating rapala would work better than a diving crankbait. 3-4 foot leader with a floating crankbait would keep the bait off the bottom to eliminate the bait hanging up and then it would be no different as if you were C rigging a texas rigged plastic as far as hang ups go. You could adjust your leader length to keep the bait closer to the bottom if you wanted. Seems to me every time you moved the bait forward the bait would dive a bit then float back up as you were taking up the slack. Never done it but just a theory

Yep we did it before and used Rapala Jerkbaits. I think the tight wiggle was the key and it doesn't dive as much or as quickly which should equate to less snags. Some of the time we had current and that helped work the bait but we got hung up more.

Like mentioned above go to the bargin bins in the tackle store. If the baits runs good and has the action you want, you can always repaint it, and to even save more money use model car paint, it is cheap and lasts good. ANy way to save a dollar. esp nowadays. I have repainted some of mine that i got in bargin bins, most lure in these bins are mostly there due to the color's. Also a floating Rap is deadly on this rig.

Try a bottom bouncer like the one's used to walleye fish. They hang up a lot less than regular sinkers and the bass don't seem to mind the extra hardware. A shallow running crank such as a Rapala on a 2 to 3 foot leader works great also a floating worm will work.

These type weights will work well in about every type cover except thick brush.

CAUTION: It doesn't cast very good. I stroll with it.

    Re: Carolina crankin

it will be about another two or three more weeks before i go fishin but then i will be living on the house boat the rest of the summer got to get moved in my new house first then it will be me and my son posted at green river. i dont know who is jonesing more me or my boy. but the first thing i am going to throw is a carolina crank on some deep humps and ledges. plus i have a new deep crankin set up that is dieing to be used. i have ben looking at those long skinny sinkers that are not suppost to get hung as easy, so i think i will give those a shot.

    thanks
