Hauling a 10' Jon Boat with an Explorer

So, I have a 10' Jon Boat and it's eating me up because I had a truck to haul it with but some dude hit me and it's totalled now. The boat wasn't licensed last year but I just licensed it this year and my dad came down and we took it out and had a blast.

I measured the dimensions of my Back window on the Explorer and the boat will fit through it (with just the window raised and the door closed). If I lay my seats down that should be over half the boat inside of the vehicle. I was thinking I could tie the window down so it won't flap. Does anybody else think this would work? I'm open to other suggestions. There's always the luggage rack but I would think it'd be hard to get up there and it'd catch too much air. I live in an apartment in Lex so a trailer is out of the question. I store the boat in my sister's back yard but I can't park a trailer there. I'm just dying to take my jon boat out on Saturdays.

Let me know what y'all think.

I'd say stick it in the back of the explorer and see what is looks like. If it only sticks out a few feet, I might just bungy cord that sucker down and go fishing. It's hard to determine things like this by measurement. Sometimes, you just gotta throw it in there and see what it looks like.

I doubt it will work putting through the window. Laying the seat down sounds better. I haul my jon boat around in a Jeep Cherokee with the seats down. Before that I had an Isuzu trooper I put the seat down and used. It works fine you just get a good breeze so it gets chilly if its cold.

For short trips what you described probably wouldn't be a problem...but if you have to travel down I-65 doing 70+ mph then it might be a big pain in the butt. One time I saw two good old boys down at Salt River haul a ten foot jon-boat on top of a Ford Taurus...they'd been fishing all night and had a pretty good mess of catch fish. They put the boat on top of the car roof and threw the catfish inside the boat and away they went. True story.

If the glass moves very much a good bump would more than likely break it. I have hauled a 14" john in my nissan truck with 6" sticking out. just flag it and go.

They also have those Extend-a-Truck things that you might want to look at. It would help support the thing out the back of the truck.
