Well, after all the talk about going hybrid fishing this past week, my Father-in-law changed his mind and wanted to go catfishing at Lake Malone. Since he has the boat, I can't complain. However, I did bring my bass gear figuring I would try some bassin while we were there. After catching a mess of cats, I decided it was time to catch some bass. It was cloudy and raining off and on (lightly) all day. I started off with a baby brush hog (watermelon/red) T-Rigged. Worked our way out of a creek and caught 4 small keepers. Got out to the main lake and hit some main lake secondary points. Flipped that baby brush hog at one point and let drop down the side of a submerged tree stump sitting in about 12 ft of water...and....WHAM! Fish was on, but had me wrapped around that tree stump bad! I kept tension on him while I quickly trolled over to the spot. Worked on him for a couple minutes, and finally he came shooting out of there! I couldn't believe I was able to keep him on! Boated him and he weighed 6.5 lbs. Biggest bass I have ever caughten out of Lake Malone. I had wondered if there were big bass in that lake. It was nice to finally see one. Overall, good day....about a 15 lb bag if I had to guess (all fish released). Got to love those Baby Brush Hogs! And those cats tasted pretty good too!

That's what I had heard for years. I guess I just never really gave it a fair shot. I always went there when my father-in-law wanted to get some cats to eat. I've always thrown a few time for bass while I was there, and caught some dinks, but this was the first time we actually decided to do some serious bass fishing for a couple hours. Guess we'll have to do that more often!

p.s. If I can figure out how to get the pics off my phone and on to the computer, I'll post the picture of the fish.
Well done and very nice report. I have never fished that lake and always wanted to but never have got around to it.
When we were coming in to the marina, there was a tournament about to start. We couldn't get out of the lake waiting for the hundred boats to launch. I just sat there and drooled over the nice boats as my father-in-law cussed about getting wet while waiting, lol!But when I whipped out that big bass to get a pic, did I ever get some looks from those tournament guys. lol!

This spring there were several tournaments that took over 30lbs to win. I have seen several from the 8-10lb range caught. There are some big fish there, but not as many as there used to be.
30lbs, that is a nice limit. Unfortunately, it seems most lakes are not what they used to be.
