    115 Merc-anybody familiar

    Looking at a 1991 boat with a 1991 Mercury.
Anybody have any experience with those motors?

Is it a known "good" motor or a known "dog"

It had the gear box (or bottom part of the lower unit) replaced two years ago.

The guy said something about that it is supposed to run on different number of cylinders depending on if you are idling or going fast or something. Sounded too complicated for me.

I have a 99' 125 merc that I bought about 3 years ago with the samething. At idle only 2 cylinders run then at about 1500 rpm or so the other 2 kick in. Not the smoothest engine, especially during the 2 to 4 switch. I've found putting it on the trailer was interesting at first also since it really takes off when the other 2 cylinders kick in so you have to be careful. Takes awhile to get used to it.

I have a 1998 Mariner 115 that I bought new. Probably the same motor that you are considering. It has served me well and continues to do so. The 2 cylinder to 4 cylinder deal is not an issue. As somone else mentioned at a certain RPM the second two cylinders kick in. I thought that point was around 1100 -1200, regardless it does idle a bit rough once you get accustomed to that it is really no big deal. It is no more complicated than your automatic transmission on your car. It is a carburated motor not fuel injected.

Best of luck with your decision,
    Mark

Likely is 1100-1200, I think my guage is on its last leg. Agree, it's not a big deal after you get accustomed to the motor.
