    Last Upward Football Game, 16-15...

I have posted the other games of the season so I thought I would post the last game results of my team the Rattlers of the Upward football league here in Frankfort. Early this morning I get 2 seperate phone calls from the Mothers of my Best and 3rd Best players on the team and both of them are sick and won't be at the game. So now I am down to 6 if all the others show up and that includes 2 - 4 yr olds, 1 - 5 yr old and 3 - 6 yr olds. At least my best QB will be there and my son the FLAG PULLING DEFENSIVE STOPPER that he is will be there but I think it will be a defensive struggle because we have played this team once and they have one kid that is probably the best player in the league but that is pretty much it.

We get there and all 6 of my players show up so it will be them the whole game both offense and defense with no subs. I decide to play a chaser on defense to when their best player is not playing QB, which he can't run the ball from that position, then I will put my fastest player to shadow him and go everywhere he goes. They get the ball first and on the 2nd play from scrimmage my son the FLAG PULLING DEFENSIVE STOPPER that he is, chase the opponent down from behind and pulls his flag in the end zone, SAFETY and 2 points for us. It stays 2-0 the entire first quarter and most of the second quarter until their best player gets loose and scores a touchdown and also the extra point so we are down 7-2 at the half. 3rd quarter and we score but miss the extra point which makes it 8-7. They score again and make it 13-8. Then they get a safety on us and makes it 15-8 just at the end of the 3rd quarter. Forth quarter starts and I run a double reverse to my best player on the field and he scores but we again can't get the conversion so the score is 15-14. Nothing the rest of the quarter until a minute to go and they have the ball and try a double reverse of their own but my son the FLAG PULLING DEFENSIVE STOPPER that he is, chases their best player down in the end zone for another SAFETY, 16-15. We get the ball back and run 3 plays and the game is over. THE RATTLERS WIN THE RATTLERS WIN OH MY GOSH THE RATTLERS WIN. We finished the season at 7-1 and beat the team that beat us twice by 3 touchdowns each game. Sad to see the season end because I had a really good bunch of kids. Went to the banquet tonight and they had a really good video of the season and each of my kids was on it a good 4-6 times each plus they gave me a coaches plaque which is pretty cool.

For Tim T: Here is my resume for the upcoming vacant Head Football Coach of University of Louisville.

YMCA - 1 spring season with all first time players age 5-7, finished 9-1 in the league, went undefeated in the "first time player" league and was never scored on in any of these games that we did not let them to be "nice guys" that I set up with the other coach in advance. Only loss came in the season ending tournament that included the teams that had been together for 3 years and we lost to one of those teams on a last second play. We lost 24-22 in the best most exciting game I have ever coached to date. Defeated 2 other teams that had been together for 3 years the same day to finish 3rd overall in the league. Compared to the other 3 teams of first time players finished 6th, 7th and 8th of an 8 team league, we did pretty good.

Upward - 1 fall season with 4-6 yr olds. Had 2 - 4 yr olds on the team even though league rules say you had to be 5 during the season minimum to be eligible but these kids don't turn 5 until Dec and Feb so I don't know how that got thru. Only 3 of my players had ever played before to begin with. Went 7-1 for the season and defeated the team that beat us twice by 3 touchdowns both games. Won the league for we beat the other 2 teams in the league 2 and 3 time respectively so we were the only team with only 1 loss. With 2 - 4 yr olds and 2 - 6 yr olds with ADHD on the team it was more than a challenge in getting them to all go in the same direction. If I said the word "Listen" once, I said it 3,768,234,098,157 times this season.

2 seasons with 4-7 yr olds and combined record of 16-2. Not bad for my first coaching jobs. Hope this will help sway the hiring committee to hire me. Put in a good word for me because I will need a job after my next surgery. This one will do. Thanks for the reference because I will put you down as one.

It is indeed a pleasure to see our children have fun and succeed.

Other children as well. My wife told me last night that 2 of the mother's were crying at the banquet last night because "Coach would not be a part of their son's lives anymore". She tells me that they both told her that I was a huge influence in them and that they had been better kids both in school and at home for the past couple of months and would make statements that "Coach said this" and "Coach said that". Both of them are single moms and neither of their Dads are around. I am thinking about calling them and offering to be a Big Brother of sort to them because they are both really good kids in a tough situation plus my son likes both of them and as it turns out both of them are best friends to boot. Just don't know how to approach the mom's with the topic and really wonder if I should but both of them seem to really like what we taught the kids this year and eveidently the kids did better because of it. Christlike - Sportsmanship - Leadership - Effort - Offense - Defense were the 6 areas that Upward stresses in the teaching so you can see the actual football areas were the last 2. We took 15 minutes per practise to teach them instead of the 6-7 that they reccommend and I think it really helped. Wonder if these kids ever get to go fishing or spend time with a father figure or big brother figure to get a good male role model perspective. I think both moms would like the idea but just don't know for sure and don't want to intervene where I am not supposed to.

By all means if you want to take the time to take a couple kids fishing, ask the parents. You might be supprised at their reaction even if they dont let them go. Youre alright Elnut for even thinking to do this.
