I posted something on the hunting board thining it was Indiana also, only to later read it was the Kentucky hunting board. There were several good ideas on how to discourage ground hogs, but the best was someone who had dogs and a rifle. Unfortunately, this person lives in Kentucky rather than Indiana. Due to the logistics and numbers of these "hogs", carbonmonoxide gasses, DNR trappers, waiting for one to show and shoot, may be less effective than the good old dog and rifle technique. There are probably eight or ten to scare off. Trapping is fine also, and I personally don't care if they are dead or alive as they are a nuisance and destroying foundations, etc. Most of them are living under the floor of a nearly collapsed peg barn; the others are under the concrete of a horse barn, and about four ft. of dirt is piled up in the corner of the barn to prove so. Or, if there is such a thing as an alpha female, if she is discouraged will the boys leave? One is also underneath the old field gravel floor in the garage as well.
There are also numerous raccoons, etc. that someone could possibly trap. Their pelts are darker than the average raccoon here. A former trapper told me he could probably get $40 out of some of the darker pelts here on E-Bay if he hustled them. That's all I know. I fish, no hunting or trapping.
