Is the Internet making us shallow?

I hope you guys don't mind the CNN link

    http://www.cnn.com/2010/TECH/web/06/07/carr.internet.overload/index.html

I work in IT, and on my work days I spend 12 hours at the datacenter, so obviously I spend a LOT of time "peering into a computer screen," and I've noticed this effect myself. Seeing it in writing like that is a confirmation to me how important it is to make time every day to get outside, whether it be for fishing, walking the dog in the woods, weeding the garden, whatever.

This part I find very true "The more information we juggle, the less able we are to make sense of it all".

Ever look something up and then it has a link to something related, so you click on it, now you have another window open and of course it has links to some more related material. By the time your done you have like five windows open and all the info starts to run together.

Then again it could just be that my pea sized liberal brain can't handle that much info.

I agree that the pace should slow down. Years ago people didn't get all bent out of shape if they couldn't reach you but now you can get drilled with questions on why you didn't return the cell phone call, text and email that was sent 10 minutes ago.

To take it another step...I wish they would outlaw cell phones in cars. I would like the peace oh yeah and it would be safer in my opinion.

The example of allowing someone to surf the web while hearing a lecture seemed kinda silly. A person paying attention and not pre-occupied doing anything else should score better on a test don't you think? I know without going through an experiment like that how I would do even if I was searching some of the info during the lecture.

yes and no, you find so many distorted facts, and the means in many cases to find the truth. It is in mycase "bubble gum" for the mind. Like to play word games on some sites, and it keeps your brain working. Now about texting or surfing while you are supposed to be doing something else, thats rude, and irresponsible. Cell phones, They are usefull, but it seems that they have fallen into the wrong hands. I think more kooks use them than sane people. In cars, dumb, in resturants dumb,But to hear them go off in church, that is the dumbest thing you can hear. What did the world do before them?

    Hey, I resemble that

I'd have to say the internet gives the opportunity to express themselves as they see fit. You-tube is loaded with folks that are proof positive our public schools can't fix all intellect woes. And yet, I'd have a hard time living without all the information or public programs, government, weather news, history, science, etc that it ofers so quickly and easily.

Internet is kinda like a loaded gun. It can get you a meal, provide enjoyment and recreation, or be a danger to one's existence. All depends on how its used.

Nice analogy. Or is that a simile? Either way I like it!
