so if we continue to have hot 90+ days how will this affect the bass. i would expect them to go deeper, but isnt there a sweet spot in water depth where it may not be as cool as the bass wants but they hold on this type of area because of the oxygen level? i may go out fishing tommorow, im going to use a gamakatsu 5-0 hook and ice cubes.![]()
Look for the thermocline on your depthfinder.
Start early and leave early if not get ready for the beatdown cause it's HOT. We caught fish Sunday in the heat of the day but it was tough. Tried some deeper water and cranked some points for a few also found a few in the nice cool shade.
How do you find the thermocline without a depth finder or a depth finder that is almost 20 years old and in B/W
On the corps of engineer page for each of their lakes they publish a graph of the water temp and dissolved oxygen versus the water depth. For Nolin, Green, Baren and Rough the thermocline is in the "vicinity" of 15-20'. Of course, it changes slightly daily depending on current conditions.
On often overlooked summer pattern is shallow grass bass. Despite water temps in the low 80s, you will still find quality bass feeding on fry in grass as shallow as 2 feet. Pitching plastics can be the ticket. Bass will tolerate the higher water temp because the grass offers shade, ambush cover, and a food source. Almost any creature bait can score, although my favorite is a tiny paca craw.
