    fort knox stream

I just happened to be milling over a map recently and noticed this stream that runs through a remote part of fort knox and runs into the salt river. The stream is entirely on the base and has several other feeder streams and going by a couple of maps I checked only has one road that crosses it but otherwise appears to be isolated. I looked and looked to try to come up with a name and on one map I believe I saw a name of Mill creek. Does anyone know anything about this remote stream? It is fishable? It would appear about the only access is that one road that crosses on the base unless one were to come up the river. I also have a feeling that the fort may not allow access to their remote corners. I am always intrigued by remote places...

Not sure what map you are using or what stream you may be looking at. Fort Knox has a bunch of streams and creeks running all through it but as you suspected most of them are OFF LIMITS because of being in impact areas. Also, even if what you are referring to is not in an impact area, it is not easy to fish on Fort Knox. First you have to get a pass just to go in the gates. Then you have to get another license to fish on Post and in my opinion the places/lakes you can fish (carlson, upper and lower Douglas) are not worth fishing since they put Grass Carp in them. BTW, coming from the Ohio or the West point ramp by boat, you can only go a short distance until the Salt River is off limits.

Unless you are military connected, I would look for somewhere else to fish.

    Re: fort knox stream

I saw this creek initially on google maps. It runs north through the middle of the base and it looks like it actually starts on base. I also see the rolling fork river ends at the salt river on base but the stream I am referring to is further west.

I figured as much that one would not be able to just go off exploring in a remote area of the base. I wasn't really serious about fishing it more than curious. With such limited access it would take a heck of an effort but it could be good fishing because of that...

kc, the bottoms where rolling fork and salt come together is area 64, I was a party leader for the gun hunt years ago and that was my area. At that time it was only open to civilians during the deer hunt weekends. The creek you saw most likely was at the base of sugarloaf. You could probably go to hunt control and still get a map of all the areas and see about access. But like I said that was back in the 70's.

A permit is required to fish on post although most streams are off limits. If you enjoy catfishing every Memorial day the salt River is opened for fishing. There are some hugh cats caught that day. It is the only tims it is fished.
