My brother and I are planning a hunting trip to texas next month. We thought of renting a truck or SUV for the trip since we both have cars. I was amazed at the quotes I got. Most places were from $700- $1200 for 4 day rental. I even checked on renting a u- haul, $450. I didn't account for that much in the old hunting budget. LOL!!! Am I just out of touch or is there somewhere cheaper I should check?

My wife & I went away for a long weekend with another couple, three golf bags, and two dogs in crates. We justified renting a Suburban because we would have needed to drive two cars otherwise. I picked it up on Thursday evening and returned it Monday evening. Enterprise at the Louisville airport for $450. One thing I noticed when checking out different pick up/drop off times, if you scheduled your drop off time later than your pick up time, you will be charged a whole additional day.
They had smaller SUVs, like Ford Escapes and Tahoes, for a little less than the Suburbans. Either way, it wasn't cheap.
Have you thought about renting a minivan , all the seats lay down you can pack allot of stuff in one, they get better gas mileage than truck, you can get one for $500 for 7 days.
You are renting a vehicle that they get a premium for. You can use a corporate rate if you or your buddy works for a company who has one. I have found carrentals.com to have some of the best rates going. The mini-van suggestion is a great one as well.
I rent a Suburban for my hunting trip each fall as well. Weekly rates are usually much cheaper than 3-5 day rates. I rented a Suburban from National last year for under $400 with corporate rate and online coupons for a week while picking up away from the airport to avoid those extra fees as well.
