    Dix River Trout - anybody.....

.....been there recently? I have a trip planned for November....Did the trout survive the drought? Also, any discussion on whether PPL will continue to pay to stock trout once they take over KU?

I am a long time lurker, first time poster here.....

    Thanks!!

This isn't overly recent, but the trout were still there in middle to late August. My cousin and I caught about 10-12 of them.

Buddy of mine and I took my boat up there this past Saturday and wore out our fly-boxes trying to find the right pattern for them. Was very occasional surface activity and water was around 58 degrees right at the rapids. We even waded up towards the dam too. Might have had more action with spinning tackle as there was a guy we spoke to that caught a couple back to back on a Mepps, but we were sticking with the fly-rods for the day. Others seemed to be having a rough time finding any activity that day as well. If fly-fishing I'd stick to small black knat patterns on the surface early in the morning, otherwise go deep with some bugger patterns or bead-heads. Spinning, any kind of small spinner (Mepps, Panther Martin, Blue Fox, etc.) would probably do the trick.

Early summer was rough as they blew it out and I think they washed alot of trout out into the river. We caught several large trout hybrid fishing down at the lock.

I don't think KU pays to stock the trout, our license fees do that. I just wonder if access may change. If they block bank access it'd be hard to drag a boat up the rapids.

I haven't been since August. We usually canoe/kayak right up to the dam. I caught alot of smallish browns nymphing, biggest was 16" which isn't very smallish. On my 4 weight it was alot of fun.

For spinning gear we use small spinners, small cranks (teeny craws) and very small jigs.

That's right, KDFWR stocks it. They just put in 500 there on the 12th:

The money from the trout program comes from the sale of trout stamps.

I thought that KU ponies up for this stocking because they own the land surrounding and downstream of the dam. Also there is a KU sign on the river that designates artificials only....maybe I'm wrong here?

I seem to remember reading a while ago about an agreement between the State and KU regarding stocking - KU would fund the stocking program, and the State would monitor and enforce. I believe this is because the Dam and hydro plant are owned by the utility, not by the Corps....

What a GREAT forum and resource this is guys....glad I joined.....
