    hummingbird si

had to get out today and try my new 898, i went to the green river (didnt get anything) the si did great when i go 6mph. but when i go faster the unit didnt read anything. i know that when you go faster than 6 mph the side imaging does work, but the depth would work either,

its not useful above 6 mph. and if it quits entirely, you have it mounted wrong. youll probably never get it right anyway. hard to hit the sweet spot

Couple of questions.Where did you mount transducer?Depth below bottom of boat?
If the 898 ducer is the same as my 1197,you will have to get a 2nd ducer to run at high speed. When you start to go on plane or run faster than 6 mph ,it will create air bubbles, etc around the SS ducer causing your problem. Also H-bird had problems with the SS ducer breaking off when mounted below hull level running over 30mph.They recommend mounting on jack plate to protect it from any type of breakage and installing a regular ducer for high speed running.I did this and have had no problems at all.You will need a y cable to add 2nd ducer. You don't want to know the cost of a replacement SS ducer.

I have it mounted to the jack plate with transducer mount from transducer saver, and how much is a 2nd transducer

You mounted it correct. With it on jackplate, once you start to come on plane it clears water. Not sure of model # transducer I mounted to run high speed, can't find the shipping invoice. All it does is your basic sonar return at high speed.Call Hummin bird Customer Service, they have been very prompt and helpfull so far.A great source of info on Humminbird SS is--http://www.bbcboards.net/zeroforum?id=279.Not sure what 2nd ducer cost is.We got everything at one time.

Here is a snapshot from Dale showing old school house foundation out from Willow Grove Marina.Several fish there, they are the small white blips, mostly to right of foundation, few are inside foundation.

Paul the transducer you have will work at high speed if you mount it in the proper spot away from turbulence and air bubbles and the prop. It should be able to get both high speed 2D readings as well as low speed SI readings and DI readings if mounted in the sweet spot. Although SI and DI readings are not going to happen at higher speeds no matter where you mount the transducer. You have to go slow and straight to get SI readings properly.

You could purchase a second 2D only transducer for the high speed depth readings only and use a cable and switch or gate thing to connect them both up to the Control head. The will both feed information to the control head and the control heads display can be switched to SI or 2D views then.

I can't remmber what Humminbird calls the switch thing but there is a technical name for it. Humminbird_Greg or the folks at Humminbird Tech Support will know the part numbers and prices.

Is there anyway you can run both the new 898 Humminbird control head and your old depth finder at the same time? IE is you old depth finder's transducer still mounted on your boat's transom? Might just use the old depth finder for high speed depth readings and then use the new SI 898 for looking at structure while going slow and straight at 4 mph.

My buddy has his 1197's transducer mounted on his aluminum boat in a way that gives him high speed readings as well as the SI readings.

Any tranducer in order to work right at high speed will have to be in the Laminar Flowing Water where there is not turbulence and air bubbles before it will work right.

if you have to get another one, get an in the hull unit. that way the next stump you hit doesnt take it out. and it will definatley read good at speed with no hassle

I did the same thing. Had to spend an extra $80-100. I was not happy after spending over a grand already. Now after all the time and money, I really like and enjoy it. Great to have, wish I had the money to get the bigger one though.
