Anyone been out to Bluegrass Pit and measured the ice thickness. I am just curious if anyone has checked the ice out there.
Can't wait until spring gets here. I am bored to death with all this ice and snow on the roads.
Greg, i drove out there the day before it opened and saw ice everywhere. im like you going crazy
Last year I saw a few guys ice fishing near the North Ramp. Since I can't fish I'll just have to go take some pictures instead. At least the snow is off the roads and it's safe to drive around now.
The last time I went over there it was partically iced up but there was still a lot of open water. But that was a few weeks ago. It's been a lot colder since that time.
How do you ice guys know when the ice is safe? With 40 deg. a couple days, and 20 the next, how do you determine its safe to be on? As you can tell, I don't ice fish, mostly because I don't know much about it. I know here around theh lakes I fish, there is no way I would take a chance at going out there.
I backed the trailer out on it today on the way back from newton. It's 2"+ at the main ramp. It broke through but barely.

I won't venture out on any ice unless I test it and find that it's 4" thick or more. Even then I won't venture out too far on the ice. You have to chop a hole in the ice and measure the thickness. But remember that not all lakes are the same. Deeper lakes take longer to cool down and freeze. Shallow ponds will freeze and thaw faster. The more water the longer it takes to cool down or heat back up. It's got to do with the specific heat of water and the amount of water.
I would not go out on any of the pits ice right now as it's not thick enough to be safe and it's been warming up like you said. Stay safe and warm guys.
do any good at newton justin?
Poted a report.
Well - the 2 guys you saw where me and my bro - ice last year was 5" thick in most spots and was safe . Four inches is my min. thickness . It has been way to warm lately for anything on the ice - they call it "rotten ice" up north . I had ordered a polar tip-up 2 weeks ago thinking maybe it would stay cold - har har , now Dicks Sporting goods stocks them and the high today is 45 .
