I'm not a 100% sure that this is true...so that said.
From a Rand Paul email list I'm subscribed to.
In a move unprecedented in American history, the Obama Administration secretly banned the re-importation of nearly one million American made M1 Garand and Carbine rifles.
The M1 Garand, developed in the late 1930’s, carried the United States through World War II seeing action in every major battle.
General Patton at the time called the M1 Garand “the greatest battle implement ever devised.”
The rifle is largely credited with giving American soldiers the advantage and securing victory for the allies.
During the Korean War, nearly one million of these rifles were brought to South Korea and left with the South Korean government afterward.
Now, South Korea wants to give American gun collectors the chance to get their hands on this unique piece of history.
A piece of American history that Barack Obama would like to see go down the memory hole.
That’s why I need as many Americans as possible to put themselves on record opposing this gun ban by signing the Official Firearms Freedom Survey I’ve enclosed.
After World War II, the United States government sent millions of these rifles overseas to our allies and friends.
Over the past 50 years, many of the countries we lent them to returned them to America to be bought and sold by firearms collectors.
This is nothing new.
Make no mistake; these rifles were made in America, by Americans, for Americans, to defend freedom on foreign shores.
As a part of our history, they are greatly sought after by American shooters and collectors.
But according to Hillary Clinton’s State Department there is a danger they might “fall into the wrong hands.”
That they might, possibly, one day be used in a crime.
No mention of the hundreds of thousands of gun owners deprived of the opportunity to own an integral part of American history.
The State Department’s outrageous claims are nothing more than a thinly veiled ploy to distract from the real issue:
President Obama’s deep seated hatred for gun rights.
While his gun-grabbing base is giddy with praise at this back-door gun ban, law-abiding citizens across the United States are crying foul.
Let me be clear: at no time in U.S. history has the ownership of this firearm -- or any part of this firearm -- been illegal, restricted or banned.
Americans have collected World War II M1 Garand and Carbine rifles for decades.
Now they are sold through the Civilian Marksmanship Program.
You can even purchase a newly manufactured model from Springfield Armory that was made just a month or two ago.
And the M1 Garand’s caliber or capacity is no more dangerous than the millions of modern firearms owned by Americans across the country today.
As you can see, there is absolutely no justification for this unconstitutional gun ban.
This is just the latest in a series of anti-gun schemes from the Obama Administration:
*** New BATFE regulations on semi-automatic rifles, requiring firearms dealers to act as an informant to anti-gun federal bureaucrats if someone buys more than one rifle;
*** The Disarming American Citizens Act (H.R. 2159 in the last Congress) letting Attorney General Eric Holder revoke the Second Amendment rights of ANY American he chooses based on pure suspicion;
*** Notorious anti-gunners appointed to the U.S. Supreme Court and other senior administration positions;
That’s why it is essential that Americans like you and I take a stand against the M1 Garand gun ban!
It has been common practice since the end of World War II to re-import these American made rifles from the foreign allies they were lent to during the war.
But the Obama Administration departs radically from the American tradition.
In fact, on top of banning American citizens from owning these historic firearms, Obama’s State Department is arranging for the destruction of nearly one million of them -- ironically, at a time of ballooning federal deficits.

Did you ever fire the M1?I have no fond memmorys of that thing.The carbine was a different animal. fired both of them numerous times.It did the job though.Having never fired one of the new army rifles I cant make any educated remark. But from some of my kin who served in Nam, most of them didn't stand up to the AK rifles for toughness.
forgot what the post was about. good ridances to that weapon, collectors already have tons of them.
Its funny. You used to be able to get Garands for reasonable price. Now the collectors have them out of reach, so a fresh batch to bring up supply would be nice. I have fired them, and they arent any worse than firing any other 30-06 out there.
As for the commenst about the AR platform not standing up to the elements as well as the AK, there is some truth to it, but as usual, it was human error and not the rifles fault. The brass desided that the new "plastic" gun with chrome lined parts was so advanced that there was no need to send cleaning kits to teh field with the rifle. So early on it got a bad name because they werent being cleaned. The AK is a great dependable weapon, but has nowhere near the accuracy of the AR. Given the choice, I am going AR every time.
The ones that would probably be available, would be shot out in many cases,and then the clips would also have to be screened to chjeck clearances, and last but not least, and good supply of band aids and thumb splints should be kept on hand.Hey if you're one of the "gotta have it" guys, check out the AA 12 shot gun, in development, but you can bet yer butt the cartels already have them
Can always argue what gun is best at a given time, but this one aint about the gun boys.
Yeah, it's a historical piece, lent to allies, blah, blah, blah. They have been all over the collector market forever...okay.
The point is that the government has no grounds whatsoever for blocking the import of these and acquisition by American citizens. There is no grounds. "Fall into the wrong hands and used in a crime" = WTF????
I would love to see the statistics on how many M1 Garands have been used in crime in the United States. You don't see many drug deals go bad by way of Raul Lopez pulling an M1 Garand out from under his coat and dropping a narc....I have a hard time picturing an Escalade speeding down an LA neighborhood with an M1 hanging out the window....and don't recall ever seeing video surveillance footage from an armed robbery on the news where the masked dude was sporting an M1 Garand.
Not recently, at least. I know that Malcolm X and the Black Panthers used to walk around with M1's back in the day...but that was more about making a statement. At least they were for gun rights.
Give me a break. No grounds whatsoever. These should be allowed back into the US for sale to collectors, or anybody who wants to have one for whatever reason. Period. End of story.

I agree to a point, BUT, why would anyone want one?They are not considered vintage.As for government retrictions, let everyone who wqants a fire arm have it, period!Felons would be covered under the existing law.Heck if you wanted it, even a tank, [you furnish crew].
The gun weighs 9 pounds. I have one and glade I do. My dad had one in Korea and said it was the best gun he ever shot. A bit heavy though. It is all a matter of opinion I guess.Can always argue what gun is best at a given time, but this one aint about the gun boys.

^ weapons that may have been used in battle are usually eaten up by collectors.
I got a coulple antique battle rifles on the wall in my man cave, just really cool conversation pieces. Ya know the rifles probably killed and who knows how many times the owner of rifle was killed and rifle switched hands.
Yeah it stinks like most of what this administration gets involved in. First they approve the import and then come up with many dumb excuses. Hillary is prolly behind this.
Any of you who want a voice in rights for gun ownership and owning guns really should join the NRA....it's our own special interest group that fights the good fight for us.
naw.....I'm just going to buy more bullets and wait for somebody to come try to take the gun away! Paaaaaaaaarrrrtttttyyyyyyy!
