Stay as far from the nest as you can to get a lure in the nest. Prevent your shadow from shading the nest. Try to flip lure as easy as possible into as close to center of nest as you can. Shake lure in place or very short hop to entice bass. Bass is not trying to eat your lure but just move it out of the nest. As soon as he or she picks it up and moves {set the hook}. White jig is my favorite lure to use and easy to see when fish picks it up. If missing fish put a small treble hook on jig as a stinger. Bedding bass are hard to catch sometimes even if you can see them. It might take 30 minutes on one fish. But dont spend that long unless its a hog. Hope this helps you some. Good luck,jc
My trouble is finding the beds in murky water.![]()
One word....Dookie Rig!
Murky water during spawn i use top water and start the lure just as close to the bank as possible. If your near a bed they will come up and get it or at least swipe at it and you will know were the nest is then.
Yea, leave them alone so they can make babies, I'll never understand why people want to catch bass off the nests, leave'em alone, just my two cents, now let the hatin begin...
Agree 100%. On most lakes we fish, nolin, rough, barren, ky. And barkley, most all of them, the fish don't all spawn at the same time. You can always find pre-spawn or post spawn bass to fish. Of course, if someone's fishing a tourn. They want tonnage, weight = $$. I just never fish for them... Tr
Agree with Mark on this. Personally, I don't see how anyone can promote catch and release, but want to target fish on the nest. Let them spawn and produce more fish. The studies that I have seen on catching bedding bass is that they will not guard the nest as aggressively as before they were caught and some move off the nest altogether. If you remove them from the area, they do not return: all the spawn are then gone.

Was out funfishing one day when we saw a bed....my buddy pitched in to it and caught the fish on the first cast...he unhooked it and put it right back in the water and it swam right directly back to the bed and didnt move....just to see how tight it was stuck to bed i trolled up to it, stuck my rod in the water and rolled the fish over with the tip of my rod....IMO a fish caught off bed and immediately released will still guard a bed as agressively as before
When i fish for bedding bass i return them to the same spot i caught it from and within 2 minutes its back on the nest. Different story when tourney fishing and removing bass from the nest and taking to weigh in. Then the nest goes ungaurded and predators eat the eggs.
My dad owns a home on a subdivision lake in Georgetown and before the monsoon hit the bass were just starting to lock on. My brother caught one of them Sunday nite and immediately released the fish and it went straight back to guarding its bed. No harm, no foul but he got to tangle with a four and a half pounder. I love getting a fish to bite on the bed. It just something about watching the fish take the bait. I know a lot of people don't agree but I think its a blast.
