    Nolin Lake

Looks like I'm taking my first trip to Nolin friday regardless of all the high water. It will probably be my only trip to take there but a customer of mine has asked me to. I want to show him a good time but personally I don't expect much. I was curious about how the lake fishes. Do you need to be back in the creeks or can you catch them in main lake pockets/mouths of creeks? Would like to catch crappie but with the water moving so much and being muddy my guess is they won't bite so probably going for bass.

His house is across the main lake from Dog Creek so thought I would try there or Rock Creek. Thanks for any advice. Taking a small boat so don't want to run all over the lake looking for fish. Also, if I'm coming from Leitchfield is there a place to get minnows?

With all the rain probably going to be VERY muddy but can't catch them at home

    Thanks

Coming from Leitchfield you will need to stop at Smitty City for your minners. You won't go all the way to Days from that direction. We were all over the lake last weekend and the further you make it towards the dam the clearer the water was. From muddy above Wax good stain in Rock and Dog creeks to clear at the dam. I'd say with the Ohio being high they won't be pulling it much this week so the levels should stay stable and the mud will start to settle out.

?? If he takes 88 to Dog Creek rd, he goes right through Wax and right past Days... True, he could lauch elsewhere much closer to Nolin, but if he wants to fish Dog, and doesn't want to run, then he's best going through Wax to the Dog Creek ramp.

He said he wanted to fish Rock Creek. And his house is on the opposite side of the lake from Dog Creek.

Thanks guys. I will be putting in across main lake from dog creek. Any recommendations on fishing pockets off main lake vs backs of creeks? Do you think the crappie or bass bite will be better? Thanks

The Crappie were HOT 10 days ago, I'd say they were scattered by the rise in water. I would target bass in the cuts you are talking about.

I know the private ramp you are launching from....directly across the main lake is a cove that also has a private ramp in it (Sunset Harbour subdivision ramp). That cove/bay is loaded with brush and stumps that homeowners put out every year. Looks like the lake stabilized at 13 feet over summer pool this morning, it's been rising every day since last Monday. They started pulling it a little harder today though (1700cfs) so it would normally start dropping some with that kind of pull. However, may rain some between now and Friday so who knows what it'll be like by then. In any case, the brush will be much deeper and out of sight for sure....you'll have to use sonar and fish in 10-15 to find it, but I would expect the crappie to still be in those same brush piles as that's were they were prepping to spawn just 10-14 days ago. Reports from last weekend said folks were still catching them around the original bank line even with the high water (I personally did not fish). I wouldn't start up in the flooded trees and timber becasue I don't think the crappie will have moved to it. There's plenty of similar brush in Dog as well, but again, you have to find it by using sonar as it will be out of sight....before the rain, you could sight fish any visible brush in 2-5ft and catch a limit in less than 3 hours.

    Good luck

He is right if you are launching from Rocky Hill Estates. There are lots of brush piles right there. I have been putting them in for years. LOL

We've always had good luck fishing shallow in backs of creeks during this time of year, however...with the water as high as it is, bank fishing will be tough. Try cranks along the old bankline, you should pick some fish up...especially if those cranks are craw-cranks! Good luck!
