Fished Friday & Saturday. Launched at Kendal and water was like the dead sea till Indian Creek. Worked my way to Helms catching up with Boone and watching him masterfully work that fly rod and pluck out the trout. He made the Courier Journal sports page out door section. they wrote up an article about the fishing at CR. Must of liked Boones fly rod action as his picture was in the paper. Fishing alone out of boat I couldn't tell you how many trout I caught. Caught a stripper around 20" and 2 slot Browns. First stripper I have caught that wasn't in salt water. Didn't know what I had and was so relieved to see it wasn't a carp. Lots of fly fishermen on river at least a dozen or so at Helm's. The brookies are there and they are everything the KFWD stated they would be. Fighters and tough. did not catch one under 12". Saturday fished with a friend who never fished for trout before. Launched at Kendal and fished to Rock house. Water temps were 48 dg. to 57dg. at Rock House. Figured river would be packed with fly fishermen yet saw one guy at Indian Creek none at Blackfish Creek and 2 at Helms. Found trout every where, where water was moving at least 1 mph. Caught 3 brown and 1 rainbow slot. Tagged into some big skip jack. Those things really put up a fight. Never had that dead time where you don't catch a fish for hours. Probably 20 to 30 minutes was the longest period of time for not reeling in something. 5 p.m. had to head back up stream and fight the shallow waters. Figured the trip back up would take 2+hrs. Made it to Blackfish Creek and past the gravel bar remarkably fast an hour and a half had to drag boat only once. Hit sand bar up and tore into some really nice white bass. Didn't measure any of them and have no scale, but they were big! At least 15' and up. Caught two more strippers and saw a huge one trail a small white bass as I brought it to boat. Guess he was wanting to eat the white bass. We caught about 30 to 40 white bass off that sand bar in about 2 hrs. Unreal! Fished till dark and had to make trip back up river with only running lights. Confident in my Humming bird as all I had to do was follow the dots to Kendall. Don't know how many fish we caught, but I'd honestly have to say over the 2 days it would be close to a 100 if not more. Small window of opportunity with the flow shut down and it paid off. Did not talk to anyone that hadn't been catching fish. I guess those were brook trout I know I've not seen them in the CR waters before and it was back in the 80's the last time I caught any brook trout. So really can't remember what a brook trout looks like. So I'll call them Brook trout til I Google them up or hear other wise.
Sounds like a good weekend man. thanks for the report.
What a trip! WTG!!! How much longer is this low water supposed to last, anyone know? Sounds like I need to get down there if I can get away.

Not sure projection was Tuesday I think then I heard Thursday. My friend had never been on river so I always start them first timers out at the dam. Saturday I was wanting to launch at Winfreys and go up to Rainbow Run for the warmer waters. Trout were a bit more active around the Rockhouse. I bet rainbow run would really have been putting out yet time was not on my side Saturday and i had to make that trip back up river. Get em while you can.
Do you have any pics of the fishing trip??????
Took a couple of my friend working his fly rod and one with a 16" rainbow he looked fresh out of a Cabelas magazine. To busy fishing to snap photos. Like to get them trout back in water as fast as possible. Catch a 20" fish I'll snap a photo. Best pictures were after Sunday morning squall that ripped through campground and leveled some tents!
