Harrods Creek - Cox Park - Duffys - 5/14 report

I went to try and launch at Cox Park on Saturday, and the cleanup crews hadn't made much progress. The park was still closed and covered in thick mud/silt.

Went to Duffy's - the parking lot was cleaned off, but the ramp still had about 8 to 10 inches of mud on it, so it was like plowing a field putting the boat in...was a muddy muddy mess! Wouldn't recommend it if you're pretty particular about keeping your boat clean. Also, a 2WD truck would probably struggle if you had to back in too far.

Fished up in Harrods Creek - water color was awesome, and surprisingly clear from what I was expecting. The bass were very active, caught several, and had a couple of keepers. The larger fish still had eggs and looked ready to pop. A HUGE log jam was at the second bridge, and impassible - looked like you could almost walk from bank to bank on it because it was so thick and tight. Saw a couple of punk kids with spray paint putting their artwork on the newly refurbished bridge. The high waters have changed the landscape in Harrods - many areas had thick accumulations of silt/mud, so much so that in many riprapped areas you couldn't even see the stone anymore. Harrods had a water temperature of around 72, and the main river was at around 64. The main river had quite a bit of current, and debris wasn't too awful bad, just had to keep your eyes open and watch for it, was mostly small stuff and scattered.

The fishing in Harrods was great, but getting into the water was the biggest challenge of the day.

Thanks for the report. I was also wondering what condition some of the ramps are in and whether the new Clarksville ramp withstood the flood waters.

Guess I'll wait till June to fish the Ohio

I went to that ramp on Tuesday, and the water was still far too high to tell. I would say it's still like that, since they've had the plug out of the dam ever since. The entire parking area there had about 2+ ft of water over it, and it too is very muddy. The old school wooden fences there at the park got shuffled around in the high water...it was a mess!

Go to Google Maps (http://maps.google.com/) and paste in these coordinates in the bar at the top, then click "search maps":
    38°19'54.70"N, 85°38'29.63"W

That will show you the mouth of Harrod's Creek, where it dumps into the Ohio. It's also where Captain's Quarters restaurant is located.
