    Otter creek no dinky trout

Fished first time otter creek park. friend and i caught around 15 rainbows and not one of them was a dink. 12 to 15" trout in about a 1/4 mile stretch wade fishing for a couple hours. Saw numerous fly rodsers, but the ultra lite was wearing them out. caught a 18" lg mouth really took me by surprise and a bunch of yellowish looking bass with the red eye. Not sure what they were, but were a lot of fun to catch on ultra lite. Kwfd really loaded the creek up nice. Rainbows had nice colors. Didn't catch any of those dark little stockers. Also getting time to break out the bug dope! Sketters are out.

All of those trout were stockers, some could have been holdovers from stockings at Ft. Knox and the KDFWR did a sticking before all of the flooding. They also stocked on Wednesday during the opening cermonies. Here is a pic from that stocking:

No doubt they were stockers usually they stock with those little 9" trout. dark colored yet we didn't tag into any of them. Stocked it with some nice rainbows. Took them out of different tank at hatchery. Think the kwfd beefed this stocking up to promote park opening.

What kind of bait where you using? I have an ultra light that I love to catch fish with, and am wondering, do I need to go buy some small baits, or will the trout eat bass style baits?

trout where banging 1/8 oz gray minnow rooster tail and 1/8oz rainbow rooster tail. Threw #5 shallow runner shad raps, but trout weren't interested in ccrankbaits. The shallow runners didn't run well in the swift current. I think those were rock bass and they would bang the shad raps. Caught the lg mouth on a deep diving #5 silver shad rap. We started at the Hwy. bridge and didn't make 1/4 to a 1/2 mile down stream. I think the sediment kicked up by the other fishermen might of shut the bite down some as we stayed out of the water as much as possible yet there were numerous guys up stream in water. Some really nice trout i was expecting the "dinky" stockers yet we didn't catch one that was under 12". Place will be packed this weekend I'm sure. Will take the canoe next trip and run the whole stretch. My first time to fish I've only been there to kayak the white water after rains kick it up.

I think what you were catching were holdover trout. I didn't see but maybe one or two 12 inch fish at the stocking when I was there and I was standing in the water near the end of the pipe that the fish were coming out of. Those trout can hold over there pretty well in the winter and spring and they will grow.

Who told you they took them out of a different tank at the hatchery? Nobody that I talked to at KDFWR mentioned it when I was there and I talked to a lot of them.

Btw Coombro, there are not smallmouth in that creek so I wouldn't even waste my time fishing for them!

Hold overs or whatever we caught some decent trout. Different tank who knows? Trout are released when they reach 9" and we didn't catch any of those 9" "dinks". I was impressed with Otter Creek. I tend to stay away after the stockings for the reason of the abundance of the 9" trout. Never said there were small mouths. Couple of guys called them small mouths yesterday and they can call them what they want. I for one know the difference. KWFD has a "Kentucky Fish" poster that shows in color the different species of fish in our waters. After looking at it this a.m. I figured the fish in question were the rock bass not the small mouth. Both fish are on the poster. Still not sure what they were, but they were fun to catch on ultra lite tackle. Defiantly not small mouths. Two different fish. Kinda like a stripper and a white bass there is a difference between the two.

Coombro, I was not trying to argue, it was an honest question about the fish stocking. One thing though, all the trout ar not 9 inches long when stocked, there are always a few shorter and a few longer.

The lack of smallmouth was my lame attempt at sarcasm. There is pretty good smallmouth fishing in the stream, particularly in the early spring.

I too have the KDFWR fish poster. It is hanging above my desk as I type this. There is a huge difference in Strippers and stripers as well. One of them my wife is okay with and the other she disapproves of me fishing for.

    Sorry for the misunderstanding.

I also noticed that the ones they stocked in Trammel were slightly bigger on average then normal....they were really fun a 3wt fly rod!

Didn't look at it as an argument more to me like a discussion. Hold over trout are nice and as i read some where thats where they start to get their colors as there's not much color to the stockers? Also my wife frowns if I'm chasing stripers or strippers.
