Thumbs up Took a young'n fishin

Today I took my 12 year old cousin fishing at a local pond. He is very inquisitive and was eager to learn the different techniques associated with bass fishing. However, the bite was very slow - only caught 2 on a plastic worm, so he had the great idea to run home and bring some hot dog to use as bait. I decided what the heck, fish wern't biting much anyway, so we went to get the hot dog.

I was expecting to maybe get a small cat, but nothing else. We were not there for 5 minutes before he hooking into a nice 3lb bass! I was completely surprised. Once we released it, he threw his line back out and I was teaching him how to tie some knots when all of the sudden his pole goes tearing towards the pond. I yell at him to grab the pole and set the hook - 15 minutes later he's holding a 10lb cat. He had a hell of a time wrangling that fish in on light tackle, but had a blast doing it. It was great getting to sit back and watch him go back and forth with that fish.

Good afternoon minus the heat, and he is eager to go again. Nothing better than spreading the enjoyment for the sport.

You did a great thing and no doubt it made his day. Hopefully it helped make yours too.

Man I try my best at introducing my 7 yr old son to fishing.....he absolutely loves it. But I run low on patience some times. It seems like every time we go he has to learn how to cast all over again. That may be why he loves jugging so much. I handed the pole to him last week when I caught a hybrid while trolling. He struggled for a few minutes and asked me to take it from him...which I did. May be too young still.

About 10 years ago when i was six, i started fishing. I had a little cheap plastic zepco. The open face had a plastic bearing i think. I hooked a 15lb cat and it was pulling drag out so fast it burned a hole in it. my dad said i told him " here take this my arms hurting!" still blows my mind to this day, that a fish must have taken drag out FAST to burn a hole in the reel.
