Cool C-river

Left my house 5am 80 degrees. Got to Helms Landing to meet Flylie at 7am. Foggy Cumberland river was as cool as cool can be. Water was 61dg and 63 was highest I saw all day. An overcast morning and slight drizzele graced us as we were expecting to break out in sweat any minute. Beat the banks with crankbaits and rooster tails and would catch a trout here and there. Never really found a concentrated amount in anyone spot. Fish were scattered. Arrived rainbow run around noon and the infamous fog that makes the CR unique was still hoovering above the water and kept us nice and cool. Sun finally broke through as we headed back up river and decided to call it a day. Managed to catch around 30 trout about 3 of them browns and none were brookies. Didn't catch any slots as the biggest of the day was 14.5". Decent trout today yet didn't catch a bunch of dinks, and there were the ones that got away. Found a few white bass. Great day and we didn't even break a sweat.

Thanks again for the ride! Good to be on the river again, plus the fantastic weather in the AM. Even better, the trout liked our offerings. Well some of them, still looking for that 20 " plus brown....just know it's sitting below one of those logs, just don't know which one..

Got back home and the HEAT was unbearable, took a nap, then later in the afternoon went to the garden and picked some berries. Thinking I now have enough to make some of that blackberry wine. I'll try and save a bottle for you...well my intentions are good anyway.

63 is actually getting warm for down there. I'm afraid it will continue to rise. Fish will start to stress between 65-70. I remember before the work on the dam the august temp would be in the 55-60 range. Can't wait for about 5 years when they finally get that thing fixed if they actually get it fixed.

Actually 63 is pretty good for down there compared to years past. When you consider the air temps and almost middle of July. In fact it wasn't uncommon to find temps, in the mid-60's before dam repair. Also have to take into consideration that temp. reading are surface as water is cooler the deeper it is. Corp. could of had lake back to 680' their target level weeks ago yet cut back the flow. cutting the river level to very low. I like to think their keeping the extra water to spare the river. That thought is highly unlikely though.
