    no new taxes REALLY

Well this has been a very bad season for myself and my family. we have not been on the water all year. I had an operation on the 24th of July Doc gave me the go ahead and start having a little fun the surgury worked out and I was stoked. We have three boats in our little stable, the family fun pontoon(riged out for fishing to. a 14ft jon, narrow beam and a 8ft narrow but deep pond hopper. My wife came home with the tags and paper work she was mad as a wet hen, the 14 foot jon was a gift to me when I was 15 by my grandfather, he said he could not watch me fishing out of a boat made from 2 1950 car hoods that we welded to make what was one of the uglyist creations ever to float. my jon boat is 40 years old. no motor other than paddles and prayers. taxes on it was $4.00, and then the county has it bite for 12 more dollars, at that point we were good. Then the clerk ask are you going to get your new tags while your here. My wife said what did I just pay you guys. The answer was that was not included in the tax. if you want to use it you will need to buy the tags, (THE TAGS WERE 15 DOLLARS A PIECE MAKING THE PRICE OF $30 FOR TWO BUMPER STICKERS) when did this start and what was the reason for this scam. Like I said it had been a bad year, and I guess I was wrong about what my registration card said I was going to pay this time. If you are an outdoorsman and you hunt or fish it seems we have a very large cost of living allowance for some one some where. Golf, softball, basket ball, football. Do they have to pay a recreation tax, or useage charge. I mean it is no secret that our country is having some hard times but selling our tags to us after we pay taxes is out there just a little to much. Can some one give me the scoop on this new wrinkle.

Poppy .... I think the "tags" are Registration tags (the yearly stickers), and are only required on a boat that has a gas/elec engine for power. "Taxes" are based on the current value of each boat. They're two different things ... and as far as I know, they've always been there.
I always mail mine in, paying what the Reg. card says I owe ... and I get my stickers back in a couple of days. Don't mind the $2 fee for doing it this way ... since it would cost me a lot more to drive down to the County Clerk's & do it in person !!

No need for tags if no motor (gas or electric).

A lot of states have sales tax surcharges on fishing and hunting equipment, would that be better?
