    Trout active at Cumberland River

The trout are alive and well in the Cumberland River, despite the claims of naysayers. I went kayak fishing Tuesday afternoon/evening and Wednesday morning and caught good numbers of rainbows and browns - and even one beautiful little brook trout. All on small spinners in riffles and fast moving water by sandbars. Nothing large but good fighting fish in the 9-13" range. It seems to me that the riffles usually produce good numbers of small to medium fish and the occasional slot rainbow or good brown.

Lots of insects, but I did not see a rise on Tuesday evening.

I am curious about the patterns any of you use for larger trout. I don't usually fool around with live bait or planer boards because I am fishing out of a kayak.

9"to 13" not consider a slot. Cumberland is down years gone by temps have taken a toll on the trout. That and an increase in possession limits and the low water levels of the past have slowed the quality of trout fishing down. Call me a naysayer if you want been fishing that river for over 20 years. Not quite what it use to be. There's still trophy trout out there yet gone are the numerous schools of of them. Haven' seen the big boys swimming around in numbers in 3 or 4 years as they were before dam repair. use to never fail to spot a few each trip. It definatley has taken a hit. Still a lot of trout out there though. It will come back.
