Ok, as some of you may have read on my other post, I am pretty new to fresh water fishing. Today was a perfect day for fishing, so out I went with my arsinal of lures. Didn't get out until almost noon.
Pretty sure I got my first sm bass today, and from what I can tell a Mooneye also. Was great to be on the water today.Correct me if I am wrong on the bass. Lm or sm? Actually think it is a Lm.
Here are the pics

Is spot a type of bass? And I am positive this is a mooneye. Had two rows of teeth. This would have been huge for a shad. Atleast the ones i've netted. Did a search, seems there a little rare but are caught all the way up into canada. Both these fish got released. The mooneye was about 3 times the size of the bass, but hey, I caught something!![]()

yes the Spotted Bass A.K.A. Kentucky Bass is a type of bass that is different than a LM. From what I can tell it is a spot. I am going by the jaw hinge not going past the eye. I'm not sure about the mooneye. But Shad can get huge, so its def. not out of the question for that to be a shad of some sort. I don't know my Shad and rough fish ID's.
Spotted bass for sure and a Skipjack Herring, Mooneye are also a type of herring but I think that one is a regular Skipjack.
I agree with Mhall, definitely a Kentucky Spotted Bass (nice fish) and a Skipjack.
Bassky
Spot and a mooneye, great bait for the blue cats
Also agree with Mhall.
Definitely a mooneye, they are in a small family, the other member is the "goldeneye". They have larger scales than shad or herring ahd don't lose them when you handle them. Great cut bait for blues and flathead. If you fish the OhioRiver, Ky River or any steams Peterson's Field Guide to North American Fishes is great to have in the boat
This is what I had read also. The scales on this fish were huge. And they did not flake at all when I handled it. The mooneyes eye was also huge, thats why I looked it up when I got home.Definitely a mooneye, they are in a small family, the other member is the "goldeneye". The other now that I have investigated was like said above, a spotted bass. I guess unlike the lm, it has spots under the dark patch line on the sides. I'm learning!
Should have kept that mooneye for bait!
Funny, both fish hit the same lure. Guess I have a favorite lure for now.
Last week I had a Mooneye that was 15" long. My biggest. This time of year I drift a piece of nightcrawler on a float 1-2 feet deep alongside docks or barges on the ohio river. Also right now is agreat time to fill the freezer with skipjacks for winter sauger fishing. I catch them throwing a sabiki rig. Right now they are 3-6 inches long but it can be real time sensitive. Right before sundown til dark 30-45 min. Had one hundred in two nights.and getting ready to go right now. Just look for them flipping or rings if the water is fairly calm,
I caught a few decent size Mooneye below Markland Dam a few years back. Pretty cool looking baitfish. The ones I caught looked a little darker brown that the one you caught.
