Garage door for pontoon

how tall does a garage door need to be to let a standard pontoon clear it.

Sorry to tell you, but there's no standard height for any pontoon boat. Too many things are taken into account. How high is the trailer , is the bimini top up or down,etc., you normally can get a few fractions of an inch, if you need it, by letting some air out of the trailer tires to get it in a bay. At BPS the sevice dept. doors were 12 ft. high.

Here's what ya do. Go to the dealer, look at a couple pontoons you might like by model, and measure them with the bimini up, and then down stowed on top of the pen rails.

Second thing to think about. Pontoon trailers have a long tongue because the square bow require it to get clearance from the towed vehicle in tight maneuvers.

So you soto think about total rig length, from the tip of the prop or farthest back portion of the engine, to the tip of the ball reciever hitch.

Example. My pontoon was a 20 foot Monarch. Total length from the prop to the hitch was 29 feet. Some because the boats motor hangs off the back of the trailer, and most because of the long trailer tongue.

Once you get the total rig length, better add 3 feet to come up with total garage depth as you'll need if for the door inset, and to allow some breathing room so you're not constantly bouncing the motor off the back wall.

Here was my logic, to build a garage with a 10 foot wide door (pontoon 8 ft) and 32 foot long, I figured it was a lot cehaper to once every 5 or 6 years have a vinyl shop make me a full cover to store the boat outside and keep the weather off. I was paying anywhere from $500 to $800 evey 5-6 years for a custome cover. As a comparison, who could build a garage for the $1300-1600 buck I spent on covers over 13 years of ownership?
