Even though he was not fishing illegally, it was not a legal fish. Even though he had the right licenses for bluefin, he did NOT have the right license for the method it was taken, therefore, it was not legal.

The rule exists for a reason. While I don't like this particular rule, bluefin tuna are very rare and highly regulated. If nets were allowed to be used, or the gubment "let this slide" then everyone and their brother would be saying the "accidentally" caught a bluefin.

While I HATE GUBMENT intrusion, I agree with it in this case.

Nothing really to say he violated the rules...just like we have to follow them he does too.....feel kind of bad about the 400,000 dollars the fish could have made him though.....

I wonder who the government sold the fish to at 5000 dollars. If it was worth over 300000 dollars someone got a great deal. Wonder if the government sold it to a friend.......

After being dragged in with a net the fish was probably dead or in too bad a shape to survive,no use throwing it back.Don't know all the rules and regulations for commercial fishing but do know shrimpers are allowed to keep any legal fish caught in their nets. Some of our fishing laws cause waste rather than protect the fishery.Long liners must go by size limits where any fish caught from the depth that snapper and grouper are caught are dead when they come aboard but they must throw back shorts where restaurants would love to get the short fish even down to 12" or so as they make great sandwiches.Since the fish was caught by the fisherman doing nothing illegal he should profit from it.It's not over yet as the fish is being sold and there is a chance he will get the proceeds.
