    Down sizing Two bank charger?

I have to replace my Dual Pro two bank 15 amp charger because I have lost one bank.

If I down size to one of the Dual Pro Sportsman models that BPS carries I think I go to a 6 amp each bank. Am I messing up and do any of you have this charger and do you like it?? What is your charge time to bring two batteries up??

Nobody in the Ville carries anything anymore they order it for you, wanted to just go pick one up and be done with it....

    Opinions please???

FWIW - I've had several experiences with BPS branded products in the last several years that were ......um, .......um, let's just say they were somewhat unpleasant. I'll still buy their products as long as it's something not terribly complicated. Lead worm weights come to mind.

I hear ya, but ''Dual Pro'' is name brand and considered one of the best onboard chargers in the business...

I was more concerned about the downsizing of chargers and the ''Sportsman'' Brand in particular..

I would rather have a Minn Kota two bank than a dual pro. That I what I use for my trolling batteries. I have a Guest that came with my boat hooked up to charge my starting battery at 8 amps. My Minn Kota charges at 5 amps per bank.

mhall - sorry about the rant. Those bad experiences are still fresh in my mind and I mistakenly thought that the Sportsman brand was strictly BPS. I can't speak to the charging time of that particular charger. Hopefully someone here can help you out with that. I understand your concern - it would really **** to be out of town for a few days and find out the hard way that your charger is not up to the task.

I had the lower amp BPS charger and it went bad in less than a year. Took it back and the guy told me they had problems with them get a MinnKota. I did and I am very happy with it. The BPS brand I had was made by ProMariner , so maybe it's different than the one you are talking about.

A 6amp per bank charger will not be adequate for your needs if you go on any trips away from home. At 6 amps, a 100 amp hour battery will take about 17 hours to charge if it is fully discharged. I learned this the hard way. I don't even understand why Bass Pro puts this type of charger in their boats! Do not go less than 10 amps per bank. An alternative would be to hook both banks to one battery. This would halve your charging time.

I have had my three bank pro mariner for 3 years and not a lick of trouble. Really pleased with it.

It would also double the voltage, 12 volt batteries usually do not respond well to 24 volts of charge. If you wired the 2 bank charger is a series circuit it would work but if you have a 24 volt system your batteries will have an uneven charge which will decrease the life of both batteries by a significate amount. ^^^^^ that.

Another option you might consider is checking with Dual Pro. I called them a few years ago about a charger I was having problems with that was out of warranty (damage was also my fault) . They sold me a reconditioned charger at a very nice discount and it is still going strong. The discount was so good that I upgraded from my two bank to a three bank. Good luck.
